Sorry mate I just want to make sure I get this right-

So you have a hp laptop (with slic2.1) and have installed hp oem win 7 and it has come up with activation a while after successful use?

Yes

working fine for 3 weeks. i booted it up to move over sum music and came up with it
testing out 64 bit on it now for a laugh that seems to be bug free

I was quite lucky with mine - installed dell oem win 7 ultimate on my dell precision t7400. First time it wanted to activate which it couldn't with oem key. I then updated to latest bios from dell which contained the slic2.1 tables and re-installed and all was sweet.

However I remember sticking a copy of vista business x86 on an older dell (maybe dimension 4600?) and it worked fine for a while (2-4 weeks) until it suddenly asked for activation.
