Hi there, i had uni in my halls a couple years back, i had a T1 connection , 10 Mb/s lets say if u never used broadband before, on this sort of connection you will be blown away, well compared to even 512k or 1Mb/s it kicks ass.
more than likely u wont be able to run FTP as they block ports with firewalls etc, u may even find certain file sharing programms will also not run because of ports being blocked.

just gotta see what happens when you try, although i would have a connection in halls any day of the week. say u download a song , mp3 format on 56k 4-5 meg file with transfer rates of 5-6kb/s in halls ur looking at anything on t1 line form 60-70k/s ,once i i had 800kb/s though bareshare and sharing within the uni network trasnfers of 1Mb/s - unbelievable speeds.
during my time i download over 70 Divx Films and countless albums

enjoy, im having my broadband 512k cable service in two weeks cant wait.

you should be getting a 10mbit line. usually hooke up to the ja.net uk education and research lines. very very fast.

as with sharing programs the ports are usually blocked. i would try tho to setup a ftp and see what happens.

if you do setup a ftp and works you should get in contact to like me and u can get warez uploaded to you at very high speeds.
if they speak o you about it say u where hacked which is believe me common nowadays.

Take the sys admin out for a very large drink
Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit the wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it

Yeah I had a connection in halls a couple of years ago at Mdx uni, believe me its a FAT pipe. But the thing was firewalled to ****. We couldnt do anything except browse the web although downloads from the web were anything up to 800k/s.

I used to use a program called http tunnel and one called SocksCap32, have a search in google. they let you run progs blocked by the firewall through your http port.

I know some unis are less strict than others though, and some have loads of open ports so u can do most things. I heard someone at my uni who was there a year or so before me started a massive ftp dump or somethin so they firewalledthe whole network =(

    good luck neway
