Help how to access and change booting order in bios on vista

my mate's forgotten his windows log in password on his HP laptop which has windows vista installed on it, i have downloaded some software called konboot and burned it as an ISO file to a CD , i tried it on my PC (windows xp) last night and when i changed the boot settings in bios to 1st boot CD ROM... 2nd boot h/d , it worked perfectly and i got in to my pass worded account without having to enter any password , although when Ive took it to my mates and tried it on his laptop i couldn't change the boot settings as i did on my xp , i eventually got in to the bios but it just had enable/disable beside the cd rom etc etc.....
if someone could let me know how to change these settings to get the cd to boot first, or if theres any easier way of changing the password i would be really grateful to hear from you......i also tried doing it by using the forgot password section under the account holders name and using my usb stick but it said that it wasn't the proper type of stick i was using ?
i also tried to get into the admin acc but that also has a password on it that "HAS BEEN FORGOTTEN",,,,
sorry to go on and on but thanks for your time

Usually it's F2 or DELETE, you could also try F12 for the one-time boot menu

bet that doesn't include BIOS passwords.. lol.

he wil still have the issue of booting from CD though, he already has the tools required, just not the knowledge on how to use em.

If you need to change a bios password i think you need to take a jumper out of the motherboard somewhere and turn it on.

Im not to sure on that. do a googe search mate

the OP is not troubled with a BIOS password from what I have read. Also, in my experience laptops rarely have jumpers..

Mickey has hit the nail by the looks of it and here at work i am working on a HP laptop which also uses F9 for the boot menu..

Laptops have CMOS clearing jumper pads which need shorting using a screwdriver, tweezers etc.

I have an old HP here and to enter the boot menu you press Esc on the BIOS screen, then select CD. Either way the splash screen should tell you which key that particular laptop uses.

    yup, or small batteries.

@OP.. my fault BIOS password came into the convo, just ignore all discussions regarding BIOS passwords as this simply isn't the case with your laptop.. you just need to find the key for the one-time boot menu hopefully.

Konboot will do the job, you just need to get your computer to boot from the disk, so stick with that for the time being as you already know how to use it.. if you get the laptop to boot from CD and konboot doesn't work then we can go into other methods of bypassing the password.. but for now, keep things simple and just try and find your one-time boot menu (prob F9)

Under no circumstances would I (or anyone worth their salt) suggest someone dismantles their laptop for a windows profile password, it is simply not necessary.
