Laptop problem

I have a Toshiba laptop and have the following problem,
when the windows 98 screen comes on and it is about to boot to the desktop the machine crashes it even does this if i try to boot in safe mode.Could this be a broken hard drive? or is it something else.

what do you mean crashes? *locksup?* have u tried a format and re install?

It just blacks out and powers off i have not tried anything yet m8

Blacking out and powering off is often a battery fault. Remove the battery and run it from mains only.

This sort of thing can happen when the battery has little life left in it from a charge, and has been sat round for a day or two, it'll fire the thing up, but it'll 'trip' out even if it's on mains.
