Default UK bottom of yet another broadband league table

Take-up of broadband in the UK lags pitifully behind other countries in Europe, according to the latest stats from Nielsen/NetRatings.

It found that only one in ten people in the UK access the Net via a broadband connection, compared to four in ten in Germany and a third of home Net users in Sweden.

Said Tom Ewing, Internet Analyst at Nielsen/NetRatings: "This time last year 5 per cent of British surfers were using a high-speed Internet connection.

"What we're seeing here is an improvement, but not much of one. Broadband is growing in this country but the Government's stated target of being the G7 leader in Broadband connectivity by 2005 is absurd if you set it against current rates of growth.

"This summer we did see a lot of aggressive marketing of broadband, and there are signs that the uptake is rising, but it'll take more than just advertising to catch up with markets like Germany."

Research published last month revealed that the UK failed to make the top 20 countries in the world to be hooked up to xDSL.

yeah, i'm sure if they want broadband takeup to skyrocket all the have to do is make it $14 (about£10) a month for a 4mb/2mb connection like a m8 of mine in Tiwan pays. i'm sure that would solve blairs problem but i get the feeling he wouldnt have the balls to push it through

yeah, it does suck, I'm getting a big fat pipe for around 20 quid/month for as many MB/Sec I can pull through it, over 25 newsfeeds (Giga,Easy etc) all uncapped, no limit on downloading and then there's good old UK, 128/256kbps for roughly the same price, with shat usenet access, then BT warn you that you're taking up too much bandwidth.

    Loverly.

Hull has to be one of the worst - a prime example of what zero competition can do - It's ridiculous

    £30 p/mth 1 gig limit
    £40 p/mth no daily limit

all set to 50 kbps MAX

No cable - No BT - No Competition
