Mmm, I really need to learn me some Java, I learnt C, C++, ObjC 2.0, Python, PHP and all that stuff first (even some LISP)... I'm not of working age yet, and I'm looking to go into software engineering. I've looked at a few job descriptions, and it does ask for some java experience in general. It doesn't seem too different to C++ syntactically or keyword wise so I think I might learn it quite quickly,it's just a question of being bothered to start learning xD

While I do like C#/.Net (given it's shortcomings) and it is (sort of) cross platform via the mono project, I would suggest going via the C++ path also.

Get yourself one of those "teach yourself C++ in 24 hours books", e.g.:

c++ will give you a better grounding of what is going on behind the scenes and will hopefully stop you falling into lots of bad habits that many self taught (or even uni taught) java programmers fall into.

They do enjoy taking liberties in their cushion padded room of a VM.
