    Big problem

The mates son's computer just packed in. When i had a look at it for him i found the heat sink had fallen of the board and on further inspection i found that the retaining bracket for the heatsink had fallen apart. Now the problem is trying to get a bracket for the mother board does anyone know where i can get my hands on one the pc is a medion from pc world. He took it back and the counter staff just laughed at him saying its a common fault but saying its out off the years warranty there is nothing the would do he even had to build it back up him self after the guy had stripped it to look at it any help or info would be fantastic as it will keep his son of my pc looking for his answers to his homework :|

The motherboard in this PC is 'MSI MS6534 P4(478) Brookdale, SDRAM,
Vers.1.0' and the bracket is part of the motherboard and we cannot supply it

Ah i see, well if its just the bracket that holds the heatsink to the board that's broken, then yes they come with the heatsink. From the sounds of it all you need is a new heatsink mate.

Can't see why that company (Medion) told u it was part of the motherboard, ive not seen a motherboard that has its own heatsink braket built onto it.

    Good luck,

    Rexmonster..

If it's just a new heatsink that you need then you can get them from here: http://www.overclock.co.uk/

All the P4 boards I used to buy included the lower half of the retaining bracket in the box.
Of late though, all the P4 boards I have bought already have the retaining bracket fixed to the board.

Don't worry about an Intel CPU burning itself out through a lack of heatsink Terry, it's just not possible (unlike an AMD that will destroy itself in under a second).

The P4 uses a HSF that clamps to a bracket which is attached to the board, I am yet to see the retietion bracket sold seperatly for either an old p2/3 board or a p4 board. The fact thet the p4 bracket seems to have a lot more stress placed on it it looks like they all are securly fastened to the boards, they can be removed the one pictured has 4 holes in each corner which a plastic pin goes through to make the plug grip the hole in the board.

The main problem is that you get a bracket with the board and cant get it anywhere else. so if you want one either buy another p4 board or contact MSI they may send you one you may also start to find scrapped p4's at computer fairs you know the ones sold as seen or untested.

It would be a waste to go and buy an exact replacement board as it is limited to 2Ghz.
