Default New computer : Advice needed

I am planning to build a new computer for myself to play games and edit some video. Below is my specs is there any thing I could improve ? I dont want any bigger hds other then the stuff i got listed.

    MotherBoard: Gigabyte AMD: GA-7VAX KT400
CPU: XP2200 (rather get xp2600, not sure on release date.
MEMORY: 3 sticks of Corsair Memory DDR PC3200 512MB
VIDEOCARD: ATI Radeon 9700 PRO 128MB
Sound Card: Creative SoundBlaster Audigy Platinum

These are the main things I want to get.

I have a dvd burner and cd burner and everything else needed.

Are they anything I could improve or changes I could make?

Is that soundcard worth money or is the cheaper Audigy Gamer that runs around 99 do the same thing basiclly?

    When is XP2600 coming out?

For the memory i was thinking of getting 1 gb sticks but I cant find them anywhere.

ummm not the gigabyte mobo, the KT400 mobo from gigabyte is WORSE than the KT333 one! just drop gigabyte.. get Epox... great motherboard... KT333 based, names 8k5a3+ or wait for another KT400 mobos from epox if you want 8xAGP bad.

the ETA of xp2400 and xp2600 is 1 of next month, 12days or so away! it think you should wait, like i am doing

i heard the KT400 based mobos have problems with multipile DDR400 memory sticks, you gotta check that issue out.

asus is safe choice. you may check soyo too. check anandtech.com and tomshardware.com read the articles about the KT333 motherboards and decide which one you wanna get!

dunno what u have ment in last question but if you are asking for their price it'll be for xp2400 about 200bucks and for the xp2600 it'll be 388bucks... check pricewatch.com do a SEARCH on cpus.

it looks you have lots of money to spend, check p4 option too.. p4 2.8Ghz cpus!

Wow seems like a big price hike for a AMD XP2600... im almost debating finally going with a INTEL PENTIUM 2.8 or mabe the 3 ghz wich will probably come out soon.

I was hoping the XP2600 be 299 tops. That price seems rather odd for a AMD chip.

As for board i want KT400 support cause i plan to by 3200 mhz memory.

I will look into the links you gave me.

KT400 is NOT DDR400 ready. its ONLY DDR333 max! they dropped that issue because of DDR400 problems. the name is a little confusing but the KT400 is like KT333a for the KT333 like the KT266a was for the KT266!

not really. the KT400 chpiset can run the ram at 100/133/166Mhz and there is no 200mhz Ram supported! so your DDR3500 will run at 166mhz max!

    1. If i go with AMD and buy the xp2600 and say 2 sticks of above memory wich board would be the best if money is no problem from that site I showed you.

    2. Hypothetical question #2 say i go out today and dont buy a XP 2600 and go with INTEL PENTIUM 2.8 what would be the best board for that with the above memory?

BOTH P4 and AthlonXP motherboards DO NOT support DDR400 which means the MHZ for RAM that it suppoerts is only 100/133/166 which is DDR2100 for 133mhz and DDR2700 for 166mhz DDR400 which is 200Mhz is NOT supported not support by SIS nor VIA. so KT400 is NOT officialy DDR400 chipset!

if you want to buy either p4 2.8ghz or athlonxp 2600+ you will not need DDR400 ram sticks! that doesn't mean the board wont run with them, that means they will run @ 166mhz max!

so its the best to get DDR333 which runs at 166mhz 1GB of 512MBx2 sticks!

AthlonXP 2600+ and P4 2.8Ghz both can be overclocked well. so its your choice which brand you want to choose.

For AthlonXP i suggest you get the latest Epox KT333 motherboard. its good overclocker and its great motherboard. called 8K5A3+ check www.epox.com or Asus if you really have to buy from that site! the most expensive asus one is the best.

For P4 you get the Asus P4: P4S533 SiS 645DX its one of the best motherboard out and it overclocks pretty good.

as to the ram get Kingston and make sure they are CAS2 chipsets. drop the DDR400 issue and get the PC2700 DDR333 ones.

    hope this info helps!
