have you tried formatting it?
(if you want to go the data recovery route, do that before attempting format)

IF you have data on the D drive then do not format it!!!
What file system did the drive use?
NTFS, Fat32?
What is your operating system? XP, Vista, 7 etc

Guns don't kill people rappers do, I'm a fucking rapper and I might kill you.
Usually happens after a Power off while the computer is using the drive. It tends to wipe the File System (NTFS). There are ways of reviving the File System WITHOUT formatting.
I cant remember how, but I'm sure someone mentioned it on here. I think it had something to do with an Acer utility if memory serves me.
Searching through my posts now to see if I can find it... Hold fire.
Give it some time windows might be automatically repairing it, especially if you did a power off when windows was using it. It does usually do this in the boot process but your set up might be a little different.
danthescan's post in the thread might help... Hopefully -

I dont reckon. Windows aint as intelligent as PlayStation! PMSL!
This is a partition error and should be fixable so long as you DONT format the drive!
----EDIT----
Load up the Computer Management Console (Type compmgmt.msc in Run Dialogue Box - Or Search if in Vista/Win7)
Click Disk Management and take a look at your D: to see if what the system recognises it as. It maybe Unallocated...?

if a hard drive is showing unallocated it wouldn't have a drive letter (as it hasn't been allocated)

chkdsk /r D:
is this a partition or is this a physical drive?
Thanks for all the advice chaps. It a DELL OPTILEX 210 L running xp.
It was not powering on this morning. Took of the cover as I though I may have to replace the power supply. Gave it a little clean and then plugged it in again and it worked but then message came D drive not accessible etc.
Going through your advice now.
Totally Random, when I do the chkdsk /r D: it says the type of file system is NTFS.
If its a dell run a hard drive test
power on press F12 > Hard drive diagnostics.
sounds like the hard drive is knackered causing a no post / Now not accessible.
can download and burn the diagnostics from here
http://support.euro.dell.com/support...&fileid=265259
extract > Burn
Boot system F12 > CD rom
Then Custom test on your hard drive.
any errors let me know
..or if your not bothered about your data, or have done the right thing and have a backup - save yourself all that palava and just go for the format - if the drive is ok it will be fully functional, if not then the drive is fooked and you haven't wasted a shed load of time working it out.
..sometimes it's best taking the hit on the chin then spending hours getting nowhere..

Shame on me!

Chaps it gets funnier, received a phone call just as I was about to have a sneaky few pints, smoke was coming out of the computer, opened it and looks like part of the motherboard is smoked beside the usb ports.

Bit of a bummer but thats life.Did you spill orange juicy in it or was it totally random.
