    Help Enhanced CRB advice

Hi everyone, I started my new job in Oct 2009 and before I started i had a standard CRB done and passed as i should have. I am now going to be working in schools and so had to apply for an enhanced CRB. I provided my Birth certificate and a photo drivers licence and a bank statement as proof of ID.

My employers were told last week that the CRB people cannot confirm my identity as they have a similar profile on the system and will need me to visit my local police station to be finger printed.

I dont see why i have to be fingerprinted to identify my identity if they managed to perform a standard CRB. I have never had a criminal record or been cautioned and i really dont want my finger prints on a database so that i might be linked to a random crime. Is there any other way round this without me having to give my finger prints?

They will only ask for fingerprints to compare with a set they already have !

Someone may have given your details to the police instead of their own or there's an alias marker on the PNC against your name.

The letter you got should state that the fingerprints will be destroyed afterwards. Unlike DNA they are not allowed to keep them unless you are convicted of a criminal offence.

Its worth £10 for a DPA printout of what the PNC has recorded against you even if you've never received a parking ticket in your life.

There is a whole collation department which sift through intelligence and attribute records on PNC and other databases such as Holmes.

Some of the records I've seen as results of DPA requests suggests much of the erroneous intelligence has been obtained using the "Men Who Stare at Goats" film script.

You'll have to take their word for it, that is unless you know the special handshake.

The simple answer is you can't. In the old days when fingerprints were a paper affair some forces would allow you to witness the destruction (usually after being found not guilty or eliminated from an enquiry ). Not so now as everything is digital.

You could write to the Chief Constable and ask him to confirm in writing to you that all records of your fingerprints has been removed after the intended use.

Might give you some satisfaction not so sure it will actually mean anything though.

Just from a technological point of view nothing digital is every deleted just backup and archived. The best you could expect is that they are not included in data available for search.

I have had to in the passed go through the DV (Developed Vetting) process just to have unescorted access to government buildings. An intrusive pain in the arse that repeats every 18 months with interviews and background checks into you and into your friends and family. They even went through my phone records and once asked me why I was making so many calls to a friend in Ireland. They knew everything about them before interviewing me.

Glad I don't have to go through that shit again.

Can't help thinking that as more and more employers require CRB checks a huge part of the population that has had some interaction with the criminal justice system in the past becomes unemployable. It makes a joke of the concept of rehabilitation.

If a youth fucks up at 18 that's a lot of life left to live in the knowledge that any career aspirations are now no longer achievable because they will fail a CRB check. So what will he end up doing ?

I am not even sure they are effective. Just look at the last few incidents of child abuse in the press. Most of these were women with a clean current CRB working with children.

    Rant Over..

I dont get why people are worried to give their details to the police. The only way your finger prints can be linked to a random crime are if your finger prints are at a scene. Im guessing if you want to work in a school that your not the type of person to have your finger prints left at random crime scenes. If however your finger prints are found and are on the system then they can eliminate you and help discover which finger prints are the ones of the person committing the crime. Id freely give mine. If it means helping catch the scum bags ripping people off
