Tech What Programming Languages do you code in?

Just thought I'd see who on digital forums was a programmer and what everyone was doing at the moment. Its always handy to know.

    My languages are:

    1. Java / Struts 2 / hibernate / spring /
    2. ILOG JRules Business Rules Management (Rules Engine)
    3. Oracle DB

These i've got less experience in but i've doing work in them a lot recently using googlemaps.

    3. C# .net
    4. Ajax ( javascript, jquery, html)

And stuff i've touched on at uni and places but never used commercially

    5. Assembly
    6. Haskell
    7. Ada 95

any excuse to use this smiley.

Currently doing everything in C#, (.net 3.5), but pretty much over the past 10 years have commercial experience of everything out there (C++, C, Java, any web stuff, AJAX, DHTML, Javascript etc.). If you're doing programming full-time there's no excuse to stick with the same stuff, move with what the market wants, currently teaching myself objective-C and iPhone dev (although i hate xcode, someone please let me do it in vs.net).

Not programmed for a while mainly DBA stuff, but have been known to do some ASP/PHP/Perl for webpage and VBS and Shell for scripts.

Did a JAVA course once but never used it and used to do COBOL and Adabas Natural back in the day.

We had an old guy who tested for us and he was a cobol guy. Retired now. The iphone I've heard is not very good for programmers. Objective-c wtf is that all about, and tying everything to mac os is a sneaky move. Guess its no different from .net though! Java for the win.

    C#
    VB.Net
C++ (not for a long time mind you)

also do stuff with actionscript in director and flash

If I get to be married to Barb I'll have total control of Sunnyvale and then I can unleash the shitnami tidal wave that will engulf Ricky and extinguish his shitflames forever. And with any luck he'll drown in the undershit of that wave. Shitwaves.

c++ mainly, ui development using atl/wtl/stl. Got the move to rewrite the base UI code in c# in the pipeline. Alot of tcl for middle tier and server code is being used (for network platform independence mainly, as our server software runs on most unix systems as well as windows.)

Part of our UI supports HTML/xml/xstl for some ui presentation as well, simply because it saves us time and get's the server guys writing (abeit shit) ui code while we work on the meat of it.

I have been reading a few threads about programming languages and was wondering if you had no experience of any language is it possable to teach yourself or do you really need a course to get you going.

Teach yourself coding is not difficult but you have to have some targets and aims to keep you going. There are so many different languages to get stuck into but if you master one then its much easier to pick up others. I always say start with Java because its all free but .net is another good one to try because you can get more instant results.

If you want something fun to do and build web app's I point people to Google Web Toolkit which is dead easy to use and has great tutorials but the main thing is you can see some results instantly which might be the difference between you giving up or not.

What sort of stuff are you interested in programming and I can give you some direction at what might be fun to look at and I'm sure other people could to.

See this previous thread for some ideas and links about programming.

I have a theory that you need to learn programming (logic etc) and then learning the actual language is more just down to differnent syntax.

I'd agree with you, once you know the theory its just a case of looking up the different syntax that is required in a specific language. Design patterns are a good example of how you can learn a pattern and apply it in all languages.

Whilst partially true its becoming harder to do with every iteration of the newer languages. The MS languages add an absolute ton of stuff to learn via the Framework classes (e.g 3.5 added LINQ etc) and only experiance with them gives you what you need.

    Okay, on mainframe Im using these;

    COBOL
    SCL
    APPLICATION MASTER

    PC platform;

    VB.NET
    ASP.NET
    Classic ASP

While Im here, anyone know of a good wrapper I can use within VB.NET to generate letters? Im using the Crystal Reports wrapper within the VS environment at the moment but it is limited when it comes to letters.
