    Default Motherboard/Processor query

    Hi,

I would like to upgrade the processor on my PC.

I've just returned from PC World(where i thought i could just go in and buy one) and they have said they need to know the spec. from my motherboard so that they can advise me on a suitable processor.

The current processor is an Intel Celeron 667 but i want a 1800+ if possible. The model of my PC is an E-tower 667 combi and i have added 128Mb Ram to make it 256Mb in total.

Where do i find the spec for my motherboard?

Is it just a case of remove old processor and insert new, i.e. can a numbnut like me do it, or will i be requiring specialist help?

    Thanks in advance

it sounds as if you are running a p3 motherboard so to get anywhere near the speed you looking for it looks like you will have to change you board / cpu and possibly memory

i think the fastest p3 cpu's are upto 1.4 gig now if your board will accept it is another matter so the guy at pc world is right in asking you which motherboard in particular you are using

Sorry to butt in here cosmicma, I just had to seize the opportunity to catch this extremely rare quote .

lombieuk I'm not sure about the complete spec of your motherboard, but I'd suspect it would require a BIOS flash to accomodate faster processors. I'll be surprised if it supports 1Ghz+ mind you.

If you want some decent speed and have a few £ to spend, a swapout of CPU/Mobo as cosmicma suggested is the way to go.

    Thanks both.

Is it a fairly simple task to change the Motherboard and CPU or would i be better off to just buy a new Tower?

    I'm budgeting for around £300 - 400.

I added another 128Mb Ram but my PC just kept crashing so i've had to take it back out and i'm back to 192Mb:oneeye:

Once more, thanks for your advice

If you're reasonably competent swapping the motherboard and CPU is a pretty straightforward task. However, there are factors to consider. If you go that route, you'll have to consider whether you want to stick with Intel or go with AMD. A reformat is also recommended when changing motherboard (especially if you're also changing CPU make).

The Intel vs AMD scenario is a whole other debate altogether .
