Mine is working even when I'm not home. I just HATE the thought of it being idle when it could be doing something constructive, so...... its never off, poor sod! Maybe those among us that have their PC's on for such lengths of time, might want to consider some sort of surge protection for both the mains and the modem? Or am I the only one that hasn't yet? Dodgy_guy, who works in a PC shop, was telling me he was amazed at the volume of people that came in for new modems, or brought PC's in with modem problems, after a recent thunderstorm here, which was over in minutes but was to blame for all the damaged systems none the less. Untill then I never really gave it a second thought, mostly because I always considered it to be a problem related to warmer climates than mine, who are much more likely to have such electrical storms. Anyone reading this ever suffered from such a problem? Who DOES have safeguards?
Mine is on 24/7 has been for the last 3 year's in all that time its been down 6 weeks in total ! OS 98 SE; I run seti@Home on mine!
I've got a 7hr disconnection on my 56k and no maximum usage policy so I leave it on 24/7 as it's always in the hub
24/7 for me, mostly because I'm Genome crunching
I just have mine on when I'm awake and at home.

@nokia - It's a local company - Karoo. Where I live it has it's own phone network (Kingston Communications) which means no Cable and no BT which means they rip you off for ADSL as you have no other choice for BB.
As far as 56k goes it's not too bad - because they own the network they aren't paying a per minute charge - hence the lack of an acceptable use policy. It costs £19.99 per month.

Running Win 2K Server as a PDC along with MS Exchange & Bulletproof FTP so my server stays on 24/7 (current uptime is 937 days, 22 hours & 37mins).
My desktop machine running Win 2k, sons PC running XP Pro (these 2 machines get a rest when we go to bed).

Oversteer is when you hit the wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it
how you find out how long ya machinr has been running?

Usually on 24/7, internet connection set to redial 5 seconds after it drops. Would like to know how much it costs to run a PC if anyone knows?
I'm going to turn it off now, for a change!

Then open a command prompt and simply type "uptime" and press enter.

I guess it's still Win2k vanilla then w/o any service packs or major hotfixes??
What is, the uptime or the setup?Originally posted by aidanjpadden
