Default setting up an ftp at a UC santa cruz

i just wanted to know if anyone has successfully setup an FTP at UC santa cruz or at any other UC.. hehe..

if there is some sort of firewall preventing someone to setup an FTP, would it be possible to setup an FTP through a port thats already open?

Most Universities have an IT department that runs all their network. Usually, these guys know more about running a network than you do. It is a sure bet that if you do run a server then they will find it and kick your ass. Universities have firewalls to prevent *unauthorised* access to their network, which is what a public FTP would be (unauthorised access)

    I would forget about it

what about p2p software, such as kazaa, morpheus, etc..

if those work at universities, upload and download, how come an FTP won't?

I gotta say this guy HerrGott is an idiot. Everyone knows that most xdcc's our edu's. Hmm... edu=university???? It's not that hard. I have a tutorial at home but i'm at work now.

Search Google!! Set up the FTP and you'll make a nice dump for a channel.

unless you have paranoid admins, cough ntnu cough, it shouldnt be that hard to bypass the firewalls and stuff. if you're behind a nat you're pretty screwed, there are some techiniques to bypass that aswell, like ssh tunnels and shit, but that usually decreases speeds and isnt very stable. most likely you're not behind a nat since people usually wants to be able to ssh to their boxes and its a mess (for the admins) to set up portbouncers in the nat.

if you're not behind a nat its just a matter of finding the unblocked ports, take something pretty high, like 7000+ and test it, port 22 is usually also open. remember admins dont want problems on their networks, so they block shit that can create problems, like smtp (they dont want an open relay) or protocols that send passwords unencrypted (ftp/pop/imap/snmp), etc.

be aware that the way admins find you are usually by measuring the traffic, so most likely they will find you if you use a lot of traffic, but from what i know thats pretty much the only way unless someone narq you.
