    Default IDE Problems

I am helping a friend build a new computer; everything is going smoothly except the motherboard won't recognize any of the ide drives.

    Here's the specs.

    mobo: Asus a7v333
    It's got a raid configuration.

    1st,
I disabled the raid, and set the cd to secondary master, and hd to primary master.
The cd light won't turn off, and I know it's not connected
    backwards because it's idiot proof.

    2nd
I enabled Raid, and still the same problem.

    3Rd.
I enabled raid, moved the devices to the "Promise" IDE channels- that's the 2 estra ones.
And the cd drive fuctions, except the motherboard won't recognize it, The hd has win me on it so it boots, but the strange thing is, it didn't recognize the hardrive either.

    primary master- none
    slave - none
    Secondary master - none
    slave - none.

The bios configuration is all set to auto on the devices, I tried selecting but didn't work either.

If anyone is familiar with this motherboard, please help
    I desperately need it.

Have you tried installing only the HD or only the CD-rom drive? Have you set the jumper settings on the HD (if needed) to master?

afaik the primary master etc is just for the standard ide devices, the raid controller is seperate thats why it shows up as none but still works (there should be a screen showing the raid controller detecting devices tho). as to the rest i dunno.

I have all the jumpers set up right. Both are masters right now.

It's strange that it only the HD works on the Raid controller-maybe because raid is for hd only. When I hook it up the standard IDE slot, the light won't turn off; I know it's not connected backwards because these won't fit. Ahhh. I'll try and use only one at a time and see how much luck I get.
    Thanks for all your help.

If you only have 1 HD and 1 Cdrom drive, you can't put those in a RAID configuration. Disable the RAID promise controller. Also make sure you plugged the HD and Cdrom drives into the right IDE buses. The CDrom must be plugged into the "Secondary IDE" and HD into "Primary IDE". There are two other IDE buses that should be used if you have RAID enabled called "PROMISE IDE" make sure you don't use those.

Thanks for all your help. I figured what was wrong now.

THe Lian Li case was aluminum and the mobo was screwed on a little too tight, and you can guess the rest.
We losened it a little bit and puse the mobo out and everything is working fine. Another lesson learned.

There is absoutely no reason why the hd cannot be used on one of the Promise IDE channels.
