    I'm on the register.

I think it should be opt-out to be honest, don't see why anybody wouldn't want to be on it unless they had specific views on the matter. The way I see it, funerals and getting bodies released always takes a little while anyway so it's not going to increase anybody's grief and I'd certainly like an organ if I needed one.

It also makes me feel like less of a cunt about the fact that I have no needle phobia and a relatively unbusy quiet life but can't be arsed giving blood.

Why will I need my organs once I'm dead? It should go towards saving someone elses life.

I'm on it, no point having a body full of bits if they can be used after I have finished with them. If I come out of the morgue in an asda carrier bag that is a job done well as they can use one of those kids coffins to save money and it will also have a reduced effect on my carbon footprint as I won't need to burn for that long to get shut of me.

I read once that if you are on the register and are effectively at death's door in hospital, certain medications that could make your final hours more comfortable may be witheld because they may contaminate the organs, so for that reason I am not on the register.

It may not be true, but in all fairness, most people I meet are such cunts they don't deserve my organs anyway. And like bert I have no heart.

thats a very good point, very well made, and it is now my reason for not being a donor also.

Even if you are on the register and carry a card your family can still refuse to donate your organs and that will be an end to it. I think if you want to donate you should. I disagree with the family having the final say and possibly going against your wishes. I don't cary a card but my family are aware anything can be used after my death.

I'm not registered. Don't want to be either. As Bert various reasons I don't want to go into.

My body will hopefully be of little use by the time i'm done with it anyway!

That said I do give blood, and was close to giving bone marrow to a colleague at work. Then I found out the full details of doing that and started bricking it. As it transpired, I didn't need to in the end, which was a relief.

I was on it but had to be removed due to illness.
now no one wants anything blood, kidneys, heart or lungs etc.

But i agree if you dont want to donate you should have to opt out not opt in.

I'm a registered donor. The one thing that does put me off is the thought that I could be extending the life of someone who I'd rather ceased to live but it's a risk I'm willing to take for the help it could give to others.

It's all a moot point for me really though, other than my eyes they'd be better off using a jacket potato than my organs.

Been registered and carried the card for years now - if they can find any use for any of my organs etc fair play - once am dead I couldn't give a shit what happens to my body so may as well be of use to someone.

I've been on the register since I got my drivers license, I think the form was in the same pack as the driving license application. I think that was the first time I ever really thought about it and thought if they can find anything worth salvaging out of me they might as well go for it.

I also agree it should be opt out rather than opt in.

im' really split on this, i love the idea of helping others once im gone, but it's knowing if you are a donor that your liver lungs heart eyes kidneys etc are removed within mintues of the flatline.

it just dosnt sit comfortably with me dunno why but for that reason at the moment im not registered.
Only in Britain….do we use the word “politics” to describe the process of Government. “Poli” in Latin meaning “many” and “tics” meaning “bloodsucking
    creatures”

Well I'll be forever in debt to the brave sole and the family who decided to give me a kidney and pancreas (cadaver donor). Spent 2 and a half years on renal dialysis.

Best past of 6 years out now and all is well, but this is a very personal subject - donor or not.

Look at Spain, your an auto donor and have to opt out, hence why Spain have a zero waiting list for transplants.

3 people die each day waiting for a transplant.

Here's an example for you - close friend of mine donated his bone marrow to save his brother and as a result his kidneys failed - all he can do now is wait and spend the rest of his life on dialysis until then, and trust me, it ain't a good place to be.

I heartfelt thanks to all that will donate if accepted - but PLEASE LET YOUR FAMILY KNOW YOUR WISHES!!!!

Registered years ago cant see the reason why not too once your dead your dead .Why let someone suffer if you can help with ur organs not like there any good to you after your gone. Its the smallest gift you could give anyone yet would mean the world to the person who it helped and their familes.
