    Default Odd networking problem

I'm using a crossover cat5e cable to connect my laptop to my new pc. It transfers at around 8kb/sec and dies down to 0kb/sec. Anyone know why? I have 3 other computers which can connect to either the laptop or the new pc and gets around 11mb/second. Its just when the specific two computers connect, the transfer just dies.

They're all running winxp pro and have 10/100 ethernet cards. If you're a genius and can finish my problem, do so, I'll give you $$ jk

When you connect to other computers to either the laptop or PC are you using the same cable that you have been using to connect the laptop and pc or is it a different cable? My first guess would be bad cable.

What network card brands do you have in each computer? are any of those built into the motherboard or are all PCI?

both are pci. one is intel based (the laptop one) and the pc one is some other brand i forgot.

    if this helps...

i did a ping test (ping -n 100) each way and they both averaged 11% data loss.

again someone please help solve this annoying problem, cause it's going to really suck in college when i am only taking these two computers.

The only thing I can think of is a different maybe shorter cable. But you tried connecting each of these two computers to another and it sent data fine? Also is either one of these connected to the internet? If so, disconnect all from the internet and try again. Also go into your control panel then network (in Win98SE) and make sure you have the same stuff installed like TCP/IP or NetBEUI or whatever u like and check properties. Try fuckin around with that control panel you just might get things working. Also try sending things to and from each computer.

    you've got bad cables there...
Buy a switch(a 5 port D-link is only like 50 bucks Canadian) and buy some new cables...

make sure both cards are running at the same speeds. dont let them auto sense, manually set both of them at either 10 or 100. also put them at half duplex. when a nic card is in full duplex mode all forms of colision detection are turned off, and no u cant turn it on, thats how the standard was designed. check out the speed settings and let me know what ya find out! oh and your cable is fine, if it works for the other ones then it would work for that one. cables dont suddenly get pissy at a specific machine and not work right =p
