i have been thinking about getting a mobile and unlocking it so i can use my simcard in it. is the only way to unlock a new decent phone to sign a 12 month contract or can i buy the phone then sign the contract later?

no u have to sign the contact to get the fone ...otherwise the only option would be to buy the mobile u want simfree and they would charge u top whack ... i personally got a samsung t100 on vodafone contract (£49.99 upfront and 12x£12.99 line rental), when it came i unlocked it and now have my o2 pay as u go sim in it , the contract sim is in the box works out on vodafone £206 over 12mnths for the samsung which aint bad as its still £270 on pay as u go ...think t-mobile are doing it for 29.99 upfront and 12 x £15 line rental
hope this helps!!
cheers mate. looks like i'm going to have to sign a contract and spend some £££. :-)
