Sanyo : Fit 1.4GB to an 80min CD-R!
Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd. (Sanyo) today announced that it has developed a new recordable optical disc technology named “HD-BURN” to realize two
times the capacity - 1.4GB - on existing CD-R media. “HD-BURN” will be incorporated with Sanyo’s SuperCombiDrive (CRD-DV2) shortly. Sanyo has finished standardization of this new recording technology already and started licensing at the same time.

I am unsure why this is a anything to get excited about. Lets get this straight - To create these disks to take a normal CDR 80min, burn it using a Special CDR burner you have to buy from Sanyo and hey presto! you get a super CDR with 1.4 Gb on it that cant be read in anything other can another Special CDR burner bought from Sanyo. I'm not shooting the messanger here but whats the point of this - surely a DVD burner using DVDR's, which I admit cost a little more (42p as opposed to 10p for CDR) have already made this technology irrelevent. Also I can use DVDR's in my PC, Xbox, PS2 and DVD player, Where will I use the Sanyo disks ?
yeah, but your most likely correct, its possible that they can be read in a normal CDrom drive - that would be the only reason for having one. Also they would have to be well under £200 (the price of a DVDR burner at the moment). Maybe they are going to sell them at a really low price and thats the angle.
