modems, xp and bt adsl

are there any probs with setting up and using a dial up modem and xp when you have bt adsl. i have tried 2different modems and 2 pc's but both say no dial tone and the machine hangs

First question that springs to mind is why are you wanting to use a dial-up connection when you have ADSL??

And secondly, do you have a filter connected to the phone-line you're trying to use?. If not, the modem will not detect a dial-tone.

This also may seem like a strange question but do u have the telephone lead connected to the right port at the back?

yeah trying to reload winxp on a mates pc so just making sure his modem works ok before i give it back
