Question LMAO Anyone speak Dutch ?

I have up untill 4pm today to learn Dutch.

I have an interview this afternoon for a job requiring me to speak/read

    1. German = no problem

    2. French = was ok at school and still can remember loads

    3. Dutch = OMG WTF ??? Panic etc !!!! I can actually understand bits as there are definate simularities with German. My trouble is the job is for a contract analysist and a Native Dutch speaking girl has already been interviewed this morning. Apparently though she was very laid back and reserved ( boring)

I honestly don't think I have a cat in hell's chance but it will be an experience and a chance to test my blagging skills.

Just offer them for a "schmoke and a pancake" and you'll be fine!

I don't think the lady that's interviewing is actually Dutch.

Now if it was her colleague I'd be fine as she used to run a squaddy pub in Paderborn.

Most Dutch speak English anyway tho don't they?

Just be honest and say you don't actually speak it, but you can understand bits due to the German. Just add that you would be willing to learn it if a necessity.

I say if it starts going really bad and you know you won't get the job then start making up your own words that sound Dutch and see if you can freak her out making her think she doesn't know it all that well either!!

    Good luck anyway.

I've heard from Dutch speakers and German speakers that learning the other is much easier than any other language as they are very similar. I also heard that you can bluff the reading of dutch if you speak German, but I'd imagine it wouldn't be accurate enough to process contracts.

I know of at least one person who wanted to learn Dutch due to living in Holland and found it almost impossible, because every time she tried to use the Dutch she had learnt they would pick up on her accent and reply in English. They are apparently very proud of speaking English well, and boy do they speak it well. A lecturer of mine at uni said he asked a taxi driver there if he could speak English and the driver was really offended by the suggestion that he wouldn't be able to.

I guess none of this helps with the reading of contracts that are written in Dutch though, just have to hope your other skills put you above the native dutch speaker to the extent that they are prepared to give you time to learn. Good luck with it

Bad luck mate.. even if you had got 90% right, that 10% wrong when talking to a customer could open up a whole world of problems lol.
