why are you changing you PC IP ?
Surely the PC is 192.68..0.1 by default, you dont need to change it. Remember the Xbox is getting the IP from the PC so its already on the network.

No mate, in 2k / XP if it cannot contact a DHCP server it will automatically assume a 169.x.x.x address.

When you turn on ICS for example you effectively turn your XP box into a simple DHCP server which then uses the 192.168.0.x addresses if that is what you have manually entered..

    .

The xbox was used on another pc not part of my network.

How do i find the ip address of my network, i did cmd then ipconfig. is this right?

is it right that the xbox and pc have to be in the same range to recognise each other?

which do i change the xbox's ip or the pc's ip, does it matter as long as they are in tge same range?

    Cheers

    Yep

Yep. The exception would be if you wanted to connect the XBox to a routable LAN in a work environment etc.. Just set up the default gateway to the router and in theory anyone on the network could connect to your box..

Doesn't matter mate, it's usually easier to go for the 192.168.0.x addresses as they're easier to remember...

Can you ping the XBox - ie try the following from cmd promt:

    ping 169.254.249.247

You should get a reply - if you get request timed out theres either a cable problem or the address isn't being saved...

are they connected via a hub / switch or via a crossover cable??

So, let me get this straight - your PC is as follows:

    IP: 169.254.249.246
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0 ??

    XBOX:

    IP: 169.254.249.247
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0 ??

OK, try forcing the PC address to 192.168.0.100 & the XBox to 192.168.0.101

The cable is going directly from Xbox to PC right?

Are you sure it's a crossover cable??

Do the connections in the cable look like this:

If so have you got another PC you can check the cable on to see if it works???

how do you force the pc ip to something else?

do i need the evolutionx cd in the xbox?
pc direct ot xbox no hub

i bought the cable from the same place i got my xbox chipped, they said i could make my own cross over cable or they had some in stock.

i go the local area connection and click properties, this gives me four types of conneciton, which do i change? (internet protocol tcp/ip?)

To force the IP in XP, erm.....

Start, Settings, Network Connections, Local Area Connection

Select Properties, then on the General tab there is a section labelled 'This connection uses the following items' - scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)'

Highlight this and hit Properties again.

It will currently be set to 'Obtain an IP address automatically' - change this to 'Use the following IP address' and enter the IP there.

Don't worry about the default gateway for now...

unfortunately that just means that the PC has detected that the power was removed from the otherside of the cable...

stick with 192.168.0.xxx this is a class C address and limits the ip search to just 254 hosts/networks...

force PC to what been said before and fix ip static on the xbox to yes.

    cheers

no of the above setting are working, what does line status 100/full duplex meas?.

what should my default gateway be?

    also,

if i set both ip's to the same, when i turn on the xbox it says that to ips conflict so cable must be ok, right!

that sounds dodgy, the pc can see the Xbox as you say since it's picking up the duplicate IP.

The line status is informing you of the speed & duplex settings, ie it's running at 100Mbp/s & full duplex means that it can send & receive simultaneously.

So, set the PC IP to something else, increment the last octet by one (ie add one to the last number)

Then, run the following from the command prompt, in the example below the XBox IP would be 192.168.0.101

    ftp 192.168.0.101

    What happens?
