Where was this? a guy I know does the designing of spill ways for the dams. so quite possibly designed that one. I went to his workshop a few month ago, he had 3 scale models in there one was up anglezark another was somewhere just off the m62 and I can't remember the 3rd one. I took some photos and will hunt them out.
this one was green withins res on saddleworth which is just of the m62 j22, dig out those pics wouldnt mind a lookWhere was this?

These are the 3 models he had in there at the time, apologies for the dodgy shots I was new to DSLR and playing. Part of what he does is model what effects a dam being breached or over flowing, there are companies who do things computer generated but they choose to go the old school way, the models are actually built from computer diagrams for exact scale ensuring that drop and positioning of everything is exact even the surfaces are to give the same scale resistance to the surface of the spillways. I think the first is the one at angelzark.
This is with the water running, shows how the water acts at the bottom of the drop, The modelling showed that work needed to be done, should the dam go then the bride at the bottom would be wiped out as well as the building on the left, I think they stepped the spillway and installed some underwater buffering at the bottom of the drop where the water spiralled
This one was a grass banked slip and it flooded pretty badly, the solution was still under development, they were trying to see how walls at the side affected things as the water came out of the res at the top it was going up the left hand side and over the top so the walls direct the water straighter down the slip.
This one I think may be the one you photoed, part of the problem is in high flow the channel doesn't contain the water, the stepping slows the water down and helps keep it in the channel
iteresting stuff, that is the one i photograpged, the little channell joining the main one at the bottom is a tunnell, we have been trying to figure out where it comes from and what its purpose is can you help cheers.

I love the composition of the first shot, great leading lines. Not sure whether i'd crop out the sky as it draws my eye away from the centre where the leading lines go to.
Like it a lot though.
