Good riders, bad riders??

I've been driving a car and riding bikes since the early 80's, and in my opinion, (in general) women are better car drivers than men.
They usually drive more sensibly and courtiously than men, and most (but not all) are better looking than men! But.........
What about riding a motorbike? I don’t know any women who ride, and I would be interested in knowing just how good women are at the 'biking thing'.

And around my way, it seems like all scooter riders are absolute arseholes! Don't get me wrong, up until a couple of months ago I was riding around on a 50cc scooter with all the sports bits on it (then I passed me test!), so I don't have anything against the bikes. It's just that they all seem to do the most stupid manouvures at the worst possible moment!

And as a side note, I recently did a little experiment (being bored).
I would stop my bike at the side of the road and take my crash helmet off and look at the side of the engine to see how many bikes would ride passed before one would stop to give assistance. Amazingly, I did this in 6 different places and the first bike that went past each time either stopped and asked if I was ok, or slowed and held the thumb up enquiringly! Would that happen in your Austin maestro?! I think not…..

Speaking from a female point of view, I don't actually ride myself but my other half has always loved bikes and has owned one for 6 years now, and we go everywhere on it. I'm also curious to know about female riders, I would give it a go myself as I now have the bug, but my feet won't even touch the ground on most bikes
On the subject of courteous riders, a few years back we got a puncture while on the motorway (luckily we were going slowly and the tyre didn't actually blow). Three bikers stopped to help, one even went so far as to give my bf a lift to the nearest town to enquire about a new tyre while the others stayed with me at the side of the road until he got back. I was very suprised by how helpful these people were, and very grateful as we would have been stranded if it wasn't for their kindness. I now know that this is common among bikers, and we always make sure we stop to help anyone who is in a similar situation to ours.

i wish i was joking but it is a sad fact,

im fed up with picking up bits of orange plastic and lever ends after another woman has a "gravity assisted motorcycle parking incident " (as we term it)

-sorry if i have upset any females reading this, but i have documented proof of the fact that women are worse when it comes to motorcycle riding than men

As I'm not actually a biker myself and have no experience of riding I was unsure of whether women are statistically better bikers as well as drivers. Judging by your post it appears not

its not entirely physical strength that lets them down, its mental attitude.
most people have a bit of a hangup about turn in the roads on 500's but for most women it becomes a mental block and then they keep saying "im never gonna get this right" men on the other hand tend to stop and think about what they are trying to do and just get on with it.

it all comes down to confidence - because riding a bike doesnt need much strengh. my missus gets on fine with all my bikes (zzr1100, gpz750turbo, st1100 pan european) - but she gets me to do a turn in the road on hers if we go out because "im better at it" she says. lack of confidence......................

So tigger, you get into work to train someone new to motorbiking.
What would be your worst nightmare? who would you NOT want to see standing there, crash hat in hand?
And what sort of person is likely to be easiest to train?
We know its generalizing, and not all people that are, say, 60 are likely to be the same sort of rider. But give us an insight into an instructors dream/nightmare.

The best pupil- a person that has ridden before and understands the basics and who also is willing to learn and LISTEN to the instructor.


the worst pupil- 16 year old gobshites that think they know it all (we call them young spunkers or future road kills)


my worst nightmare would be a 16/17 year old fella thats been round a field once on a puch maxi and thinks he could take on carl fogarty and win- and every sentance that comes from him starts with "my mate sez................. and looks and listens to everything around him appart from me.
also they have the idea that to get a CBT they just have to turn up.

Been there done that! Had my bike licence for 20 years and thought I knew it all, decided to take my Advanced Police MC test. Turned up listened to jack shit and failed, looked like a total novice compared to the instructors...Live and lern I suppose.

Hi m8 If anyone dont listen to the instructor on my course he just gets you to pull up safely & then kicks your Ass ( seems to work a treat) :o: :bleh:

Think the physical strengh thing and the confidence thing does come into it, i ride a blade and a couple of female friends ride a cbr 400 and a cbr 600 and they have both dropped there bikes a fair few times. But to be honest when i follow either of them when they are actually moving and not picking bits of plastic off the road, they are spot on, very good smooth and fast riders, it just seems to be when they are doing u turns and slow manouvres, obviously a bike is at its heaviest when moving slowly so the physical strengh probably does come into it.

Oh nicci if you have trouble getting your feet to touch the ground try a cbr 400 thats why my friend went for one - she is quite vertically challenged! go for it you will be so pleased when you have your own bike. good luck!!
