Default Shares - What To Invest In?

    Hi,

We've gotta do this thing at college where we invest some money into about 5 companies' shares, in able to make a profit by January '03. Now, me like a dick, knows shit all about the FTSE and shares, so someone gimme a hand and tell me what to invest in. Bare in mind that It must make a profit by January 2003 (3/4 months investment).

Gimme some companies to invest in, and good reasons too pls.

    Thanks

No loss for me. Not our money.
If we profit, and get through to the National quarter finals then it's £2,500 4 ways. And if we get through all the way and win the finals it's like £10,000 4 Ways.

But the money isn't wehy I'm doing it, honestly.

oil stocks could rocket if we do go to war with iraq, banking is usualy steady and safe, if you want a guarenteed increase then dump em in something like aberdeen prolific E.I. shares they give a decent return, black and decker could go up as they are reducing costs.

Stay clear of tech stocks or telecoms as they are in the pits and not likely to go up much for at least 9 months (and stay clear of m$, thery are haemoraging money at the moment with the xbox, and trying to spend their way out of it by buying into lossmaking software houses in the hopes of future decent exclusive games, in 6 months or so rares first xbox game will come out and could rally ms stocks for a while).

companies are doing quite bad all round. Best bet is to pick companies that have some revenues from patents and intellectual property as they will get revenue for comapnies using their ideas, whether it sells or not does not matter. One of the best companies for this is ARM Technologies. They have the intellectual property for many of the processors used in embedded systems such as TV's, PDAs and even the gameboy advance.

    thats my choice good luck

oil yeah, u have to think real deep.... i'd say music companies... craig david and miss dynamites record lables... they're exploding this year... i remember when they're was a big oil spilage in the sea someone invested alot of money in the company that make the chemical stuff to clean the birds / wildlife etc and they made a massive killing cos the company sold tons to the wildlife saving peeps....
Whats the next big thing? J2ME. (Java2 micro edition) the applications on mobile phones.... find the biggest best company that supply that... if u want to take a risk on the technology market...

We've already decided on an Oil company (northern I think), and a bank (not sure which, but hear there's a merger coming up, so maybe that). We were also thinking about MMo2 (The Phone Network O2) as they are doing really well the last month, and their sales are about to reach an all time high I think.

    Need some investment ones too.

Cheers for the help so far guys.

TBH the risk v reward is is already built into the share price. there is a ****ing army of analysts who still can't predict what will happen to these companys profits... I have a degree in economics and it's basically anyones guess when it comes to investing.

There are some basic rules.. If you are looking to make the most money from all the competitors in 3 months then choose some risky startup venture that will probably fold but might make billions in the next few years. Think Glaxo or Microsoft.

If you were doing it for your pension just stick half a dozen darts into the ftse100 and hold those shares for like 15 years. You will probably get 15% per year compounded every six months. Lot of fooking money over 35 years by the time you retire trust me

If it's just for the craic for your college work you want maximum return and maximum risk investments prolly. maybe you could explain the rules a bit better

Can you buy and sell these shares, or is it a case of pick 5 and leave them be until Jan 03?

If you can buy and sell at will, looking for maximum return I would look at penny shares.

Dragon Oil would be a good bet, currently bidding at 14p, have the China Oil market in their sites and the price varies from 12 to 17.5p

A 3p increase will increase your cash by 25%.

Have a good long look at www.iii.co.uk A great site for shares data.

Also, have a look for pharmacutical companies who have a drug due for FDA approval, they can jump 40% or more in value on approval (or drop like a stone if refused).

Dragon oil brings back fond memories m8 , they were a company that i was informed about when the shares were a few pence each quite a few years ago .
I had a call from a source telling me to buy as they had found a massive oil site in their boundaries .
The prices have rocketed since and are a good bet for short to medium term growth although on a longer term they could become unstable .
As far as ia am informed 02 aren't reaching their targets quite as well as they want us to think , but could be wrong .
Property growth is by far the best bet at the moment and could yield a good investment , though be it not necessarily on a short term basis .
