    Default Windows uses 20% of your bandwidth! Get it back

    Somthing i though i would share with you all....

    Increase Your Bandwidth By 20%, It Really Works
    Increase your Bandwidth by 20%
    Windows uses 20% of your bandwidth! Get it back

    A nice little tweak for XP. M*crosoft reserve 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes (suspect for updates and interrogating your machine etc..)

    Here's how to get it back:

    Click Start-->Run-->type "gpedit.msc" without the "

    This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:

    Local Computer Policy-->Computer Configuration-->Administrative Templates-->Network-->QOS Packet Scheduler-->Limit Reservable Bandwidth

    Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab :

    "By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."

    So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.
    works on XP Pro, and 2000
    other OS not tested.

You won't notice any increase, all you'll do is prevent your machine from allocating bandwidth correctly. Alter it and you'll saturate your connection so nothing else will work while downloading. If you have nothing running anyway, your download speed will of course be allocated 100% bandwidth & not throttled by 20% while MS 'spy' on you.. I have 5 pcs running here at home and if they all start getting the same windows 7 updates at the same time then it slows my pc down from the downloads

    Agreed. my pc stays on all the time. the kids and wifeys comes on a few times but its when they all decide to go on facebook or whatever shiit places they goto the windows update pops up and takes all my download bandwidth

    Have to agree with Kry0.

    It does absolutely nothing to your download speeds as it's an "on demand" application that only activates at certain points and not 24/7.

    As kry0genik says, this is utter bollocks. Even with no knowledge of QoS and how it works you could see from common sense that Microsoft would never have something like that set up.

    QoS is just like lanes in a motorway, the exact rule applied would say you aren't allowed in the fast lane if somebody else is trying to overtake you. That's subtly different from the Highway Code, but it is a policy that a lot of drivers follow anyway so the analogy does make sense, since loads of people do sit in the fast lane to overtake lorries but then pull out of the way when somebody going really fast comes up behind them. If you live down south you can adapt the analogy to your fucking terrifying 3 lane motorways.

    QoS stands for quality of service and sets aside a guaranteed proportion of bandwidth for packets fitting a certain description, but ONLY when needed. So on a quiet motorway, a lorry doing 60mph will happily spend 15 minutes overtaking another lorry doing 59mph, but as soon as things get busy they wouldn't (shouldn't) attempt such a stunt.

    QoS has loads of important applications, such as VOIP. Since the phonecalls would be interrupted by not getting enough bandwidth for even a second, some is reserved by QoS for the VOIP packets and the phone calls are then guaranteed to work. QoS can get a bad name from ISPs putting web traffic ahead of torrents and slowing things down, but in reality that is caused by them not having enough bandwidth for all their customers and being forced to use tricks like QoS to allow webpages to load. Of course, most home internet connections will be swamped by big downloads so you can legitimately use QoS to allocate some space for non-torrent traffic to keep everyone happy, if your router supports it.

    Allocating 20% to Windows Update is like allocating 20% to fuck all. Yes, disabling it will make things that are not Windows Update run faster when your connection is at more than 80% utilisation and Windows Update is running, but as kry0genik said, that very very rarely happens.

    Just realised a part time bus-lane that is only active during rush hour would have been a better road analogy. Ah well. The difference with that is that roads are at 100% utilisation every day during rush hour, whereas the temporary bus-lane would never kick in with a home internet connection when it only runs during Windows Update.

    Lastly, if the QoS is running on your 100mbit network card then chopping off 20% of that isn't going to affect your 8mbit internet connection.
