Hitman 2: Silent Assassin - Crashes with Sound Blaster PCI View for Printing

    01 October, 2002

Hitman 2 crashes at startup with Sound Blaster PCI. Lower Hardware Sound Acceleration in Windows.

If you are experiencing a crash when starting Hitman 2 with an error such as "Invalid Page Fault" or a problem with "EAX.dll" and you have an older sound card that does not fully support EAX (for example, Creative Labs Sound Blaster PCI, PCI 64, PCI 128 or PCI 512) try lowering or disabling Hardware Acceleration for Sound in Windows using the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.

Go to Start>Run>type dxdiag>Click OK>Look on Sound Tab>Set Hardware Sound Acceleration down to None, Basic or Standard instead of Full Acceleration. Exit the Tool, then try the game again. If you find that the game runs after lowering Hardware Sound Acceleration it likely means that your sound card or device is not EAX compatible.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Add EaxDisable to Hitman2.ini

If you are able to run the game by lowering Hardware Sound Acceleration, remember that this will affect your other programs as well. If you do not want to lower Sound Acceleration each time you play Hitman 2, there is a more permenent way to correct the problem.

Go to Start>Search>search for files or folders called "Hitman2.ini">Search Now. When Windows locates the file, double-click it to Open it in Notepad, then scroll all the way down to the bottom of the file and add the line "EaxDisable" (no quotes), then Save the Hitman2.ini file and quit the Notepad. You should now be able to play on Non-EAX-compatible sound cards without manually adjusting the Sound Acceleration level in Windows.
