Spielberg's King Arthur: The Telegraph has further details on Steven Spielberg's upcoming King Arthur HBO mini-series and it challenges a few conventions. No round table, Excalibur, Lancelot, Merlin or even knights will appear in this production which will be shot in Britain next year, and the glorious Camelot will rather be a simple Roman fort. "I am not interested in mysticism. I am not setting out to create magic. There's no point in making this film unless you get under the skin of it and to the reality as it would have been at that time" says writer David Leland ("Band of Brothers") whose penning the £85 million series which aims to recreate the "historical reality" of what life was like in 500AD, around the time Arthur was thought to be king. In fact Arthur, to be known as Artos, will be a humble blacksmith who becomes king thanks to his forging skills. Instead of knights there'll be a 'brotherhood of companions' and casting will begin in January. The project faces competition from a similar one by Jerry Bruckheimer whose version paints a slightly different reality (ie. Arthur was a Roman & the Knights were Russians).
