Default Estate agents, do I need one?

Think this would be the right place to post..

Been thinking about moving house for a while now and was hoping to put my own home on the market early next year. My girlfriend has a friend who is very interested in buying my house (almost immediately) and I do have a house in mind to buy which is already on the market.
My question is will I need to involve an estate agent or will I just need solicitors? what do estate agents actually do, apart from advertise your home?

    All help appreciated

I bought a house last year and from what I can tell - nothing. I suggest speaking to your solicitor about it. People sell there homes on the internet all the time to save money and dont involve a Est Agent.

M8, I sold my house in May and bought a new one. All I did was put a home made for sale sign in the garden. and 3 days later I had an offer. I did not use an estate agent at all and only used the solicitors. Incidentlly when I originally sold my last house years ago, the estate agents charged me £1100 for doing bugg** all. The only advertise and take phone calls for you. Then take commision based on the price you get. My advice: Sell it yourself.
