    languages to lurn

    someone told me to lurn html,php and
    javascript as they are the most useful
    languages to fully lurn.at the moment
    i am lurning html and i would like to lurn
    php and javascript after.he also told me
    not to lurn cgi.what i would like to know
    is will i only need to know html,php and
    javascript.i also seen somewhere that
    php and mysql are for database websites
    so if i lurned php can i forget about mysql
    and also i heared that cgi and perl are nearly
    the same so would perl be a waste of time to
    lurn.any help greatly received.

    HTML is technically a language, it describes layout and has no logical methods or instructions.

    JavaScript, is a language that goes with HTML (i.e. it runs only in the browser)

    PHP is technically CGI, it works in a similar way, however it is just the way the folders are organised that give people the misapprehention that CGI and PHP are different. CGI isn't a language but a method of implementing code, CGI could be code written in Perl, C, Cobol or any language that happens to be on the box.. you could write it in AWK if you wanted too.

    If you are wanting to do web design then

    Learn HTML first
    JavaScript second
    CSS third

    Then once you are comfortable with all of the above then, go for PHP or Perl or ASP. ASP is probably one of the easiest to learn.

    try this, there are only a certain number of colours which are guarenteed to be the same over all platforms and browsers, these are called web safe colours

    a colour attribute takes a value in hexidecimal of the format

    RRGGBB

    RR = Red
    GG = Green
    BB = Blue

    Web safe values are 00,33,66,99,CC,FF for either of the constituent parts 00 is the lowest FF the highest, the higher the value the sharper and brighter the colour..

    see here http://www.lynda.com/hexh.html

    An easy way to get the hex value of a colour you want is to use Word, set the Word doc to the colour you want and select save as html, then view the code produced for the colour code.

    cheers graham.edmon for link.i used
    front page 2000 and put a colour in
    the html and then viewed it in normal
    then in preview it was the same colour.
    but when i changed 2 letters that was
    not web safe it was a different colour
    in preview.also by puting an extra f in
    the colour blue made it get brighter.i
