boot up problem

On friday night I left my computer on overnight downloading from Kazaa lite only to find in the morning a complete blank screen and unable to boot up the system. I was running windows xp professional. Over the last 24 hours I have managed to format my hard drive and install windows 98 instead as I thought that this might be the problem. However it take me about between 20/30 go's to boot up the system. I press reset and the orange light on the monitor stays orange and the computer beeps every 2 seconds or so and the screen stays blank eventiually when the sytem starts the green light comes on on the monitor and the system starts.I have tried to install some Norton Utilites but the screen turns blue with fatal exception error or something
and text about a VXD cache or something
My Board is a MSI 6378 with 1900 athlon
60gig hard drive
lg dvd drive
plextor r/w

Any help would be greatly apreciated

Open up the PC and make sure everything is securely plugged in, memory and gfx card especially.

I'll check the hard drive as the graphics and sound is onboard.

right down any vxd errors on boot up

when ya finally get booted up go start run and type sfc

restore all your errors from your 98 disc just follow on screen instruction
