Sky News and Sky One go widescreen this week

Sky News and Sky One are expected to begin broadcasting in 16:9 widescreen format this week. The pair intend to switch to the format at 6am on October 16, although this date could be delayed by ongoing technical tests. Sky has also said it plans to switch its film channels over to widescreen format by Easter 2003 - a move that's sure to be welcomed by film fans.

    Yes, this good news.

I half expected Sky to offer a second version of Sky One, Sky One Wide and charge those who wish to view Wide Screen TV an extra "premium".

Watching the Second series of Enterprise, more and more of the shots contain important action and diologue outside the 4:3 edges.

It was Sky narrow mindness that caused this problem in the first place. Design a system that can select between 4:3 and 16:9 but refuse to kit themselves out with the required broadcasting equipment from the start.

Movies not until 2003 is a shame but Sky One is better than none. Why they choose to upgrade Sky News before Sky movies is beyond me.
