Laptop Graphics Card

I think this question may have been asked before, but....
Is it possible to upgrade the graphics card on a laptop?
At the moment I have a NEC laptop which is fine for everyday use and emulators, but it's lacking punch in any 3D games.

I doubt it as most are built on the systemboard
