    xp mpg codec problem

HAve just installed xp pro on my new system and have been playing around installing codecs.

    Installed divx 502 bundle
    Installed nimo codec pack

Now several divx play audio ok but no video (read could be problem with xp media player - beta 9 fixes this)

But, in the process of this I appear to have corrupted/removed the codec which plays back standard mpg,m2v video.

Tried tmpgenc'ing a file and playing back and get "filetype not supported" both with a combined mpg audio+vid and just m2v video

New to xp, how can I check a codec, completely remove or reinstall again (tried reinstalling meda player - not working )

You could just use System Restore.

To check what codec you have installed, go to Control Panel-Sounds And Audio Devices-Hardware-Highlight Video Codecs-Properties-Properties Again.

You could try re-installing the WMP codecs - go [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

I'm not sure, but I don't think WMP plays m2v (SVCD?) by default, you'd need a separate pluging for this as well.

    It's the one I attached.

    Best bet though, System Restore.

    All the best

reinstalled wmp8 codec - still not happy

Looked around and found that the xp version of mp8 plays avi files with mp3 audio as an mp3 track - ie no video !!
Updating to mp9 beta cured this.

    Still got no mpg/playback
Installed cronus71's svd codes into system32 on xp (says system in readme) and voila all working.
Got to get the right setting in tmpgenc now and I'm laughing

    Thanks everyone
