Default Help with PC reconising SDRAM!

I'm not sure that this request should be in here or in the hardware section....If it's wrong than sorry, but here goes.
I have a gigabite M/B, GA-71XE4 with a 1.2 AMD CPU. The Bios has been flashed to the most upto date bios. I use 2x 128 133 SDRAM chips. I have just bought a new Kingston 256 133 SDRAM chip to add to it, thus making 512 altogether.
When I added the 256 chip the system would not reconise it either in the Bios or on the OS system. I have tried all combinations re sitting the chips on the M/B. but with no luck. I have tried to use the 256 chip on it's own but the computer will not even boot to the post!
I have been back to the shop and tried another chip and still the same problem. I can not help feeling I'm missing something.

    Can any one help please?

From my experience, the GA-7IXE4 will only work with PC100 spec ram. I had similar with a couple of boards, and I had to buy some Kingston 256Mb PC100 spec to solve it.

This board should work with PC133.

    Check out here.

In my opinion these are the best place to get RAM from as they test everything they sell for capatibilty with each motherboard

They may be a little more expensive than other places but at least you know what you buy will be compatible.

    Free delivery as well.

    From my experience, PC133 128Mb works fine, but PC133 256Mb doesn't, only PC100.

Thanks for all the help. Q. What is the differance between the chip lengths? I thought they were standard, but that site gives a choise as well as choise of speeds?

    dalmations,

if the new ram you have put into your motherboard appers to fit, then it is the right size for you, and as for the speed, see what your other stick of ram is running at (look in the bios if you are not sure and see what it is set at)

i know it may be a little patronising, but have you pushed the new stick of ram down as far as it will go, and are all the end clips for the ram pushed back to the home position (closed) i think some motherboards have a little microswitch under these end tabs.
