Sorry i was tired. My g/f's laptop is a hp omnibook900. I'm trying to use a set of nokia cable's with it for logo's unlocking ect. when i try it says associated with a modem.

All i can think of is that the unlocking software is looking for the cable on com3 which is usually used as the com port for internal modems on laptops.
Try looking at the settings in the phone software.

One physical com port can be assigned to different uses electronically in you case it looks as if it’s associated with an internal modem, check in device manager for port configuration.
