I had never heard them called Pikeys before i saw the film, I have heard them called Jippo's, diddy's or Travellers but most people i know call them Pikeys now.

Her is some Slang Translations from the film for all you Yanks

shite - northern dialect version of 'shit'

pikey - a gypsy or vagrant. This term comes from the 'Kentish' dialect word 'pike' meaning 'toll-gate'. Later in the 19th century 'a pike' was 'a road'

    porky pies - lies

minerals - testicles. This comes from the Rhyming Slang term 'Family Jewels' (pron. "jawls") = 'balls'

many different men to see about many different dogs - comes from the euphemism "see a man about a dog", meaning - to do something unspecified (normally secret).

large - a thousand pounds. e.g. "Ten large to help the situation".

Jacob's - Rhyming Slang for 'Jacob's Cream Crackers' - 'knackers' which is slang for 'testicles'.

    k - a thousand pounds.

disco biscuits - ecstacy (the drug).

Pikey is a common London word for a Gypsy/romany/traveler

I been calling them Pikey's since I was a nipper

Brilliant film - i too refer to the vagrant traveller type as what is affectionately termed "a fcuking pikey" .

.. but many Northerners get annoyed with the London accent... hahah but who cares about the bloody northerners
As a southerner who has just spent 4 year on wearside (sunderland for those of you fortunate enough not to have visited it), and wizer is right.

Mind you tho - prove your worth in the batlle ground (pub), in their sport of choice (driking), and they'll almost take you as one of their own. Still, nevermind, at least you'll be p*ssed

p.s. Bit off topic i know, but i'm bored at work !!

Never argue with an idiot. They will bring you down to their level, then beat you with experience.
