Default Finding the IP address of a printer (to print for free at Sheff Hallam Uni)

First off my uni are robbing C**ts

    Prices
    Size Type Price
A4 Black and white Double sided 8p*
A4 Black and white Single sided 5p
A4 Black and white Acetate/Bring your own paper 5p**
    A4 Black and white Pastel-shaded paper, Double-sided 8p
    A4 Colour Single sided 25p
    A4 Colour Acetate/Bring your own paper 25p**
    A3 Colour Single sided 50p
A3 Black and white Single sided 10p

i worked out in my first year to print for free by getting the ip address of the printer and printer via its http config page.

but after i got back from placement yar they seemed to have put a stop to this by locking the menus on the printers so i can't print a config page so i can't find the ip address.

i also can't find the address in the properties menu of the printer.

does anyone have any ideas as to how i could find this as at the moment i've only got the address for a couple b\w printers and and i want to print in colour.

Download Cain from oxid.it and scan the network for print servers.

i have thought about this before but if i recall right cain gets picked up by my anti virus and produces an alert so i would assume similar would happen at uni so its a bit dodgy.

Be careful with any scanning software, if you were where i am i would be noticing and kicking you out of the UNI......

Not sure what they have in place at Hallam..!

Try ping the printer name and see if you get a reply?

Do they IP's not follow any kind of pattern\scheme?

e.g. if they are all high end just try hitting a high end number on the subnet you are on?

Off the top of my head most TCP/IP printers are either using 515/TCP or 9100/TCP - what are the IP's you've got?

If you've got access to a command prompt with telnet you could just do a quick test in there - like the guys say they're probably all grouped together in the IP range.

Likewise if they're HP print servers you can usually just telnet to the IP and it'll give the JetDirect prompt.

has the printer got a tag number? if so ping the tag, you may have to prefix it though

i will be able to check the printers that i can get the addresses for tomorrow but if memory serves me right they didn't seem grouped in anyway. i will also check the tag numbers for any link.

From the ips i have noted from 2 years ago it would seem the subnet changes from building to build and floor to floor so trying to guess the addresses would be difficult.

on the ports tabs on the properties of the printer it doesn't gives an address instead it says \\shu\doubledsided\hp......... etc etc

    thanks for your advice

Alternative - HP Jetdirect software from HP will poll for all available HP printers.

Ricoh SmartDeviceMonitor for Admin picks up anything with snmp - pretty much any network printer as long as it's enabled.

Just thought, you tried pinging the host name of the printer you found in the ports tab?
