Default Brand new PC Resets after 15min of being idle, when mouse is moved.. help!!

hi all.. i have just brought a brand new pc for someone off a company out of micro-mart, i set it all up fine, installed windows 98se fine but then noticed that if you leave it alone and dont touch anything for about 15 mins and then move the mouse then the whle pc restarts, power just goes straigt away and starts to load up again..

any ideas on what can be causing this problem? shorly it cant be a software fault?

    cheers all

Switch off the power saving features in both the mainboard BIOS and Windows and try again. They're probably conflicting.

Yep, it's probably a Power Management issue.
When it's left there, does it go into a power saving mode?

Boot to the BIOS, leave it there for a equal amount of time, does it behave the same way?

    Is it a USB mouse?

Well since it does not happen in the BIOS, I'd say it's almost certainly driver/software related, most likely with one of these 2 network/graphics -card.

If it's hardware, then it would probably be an issue with the memory.

Since I don't have a one line answer, I can only come up with ideas to narrow down the issue.

Boot into Safe mode, does it happen?

If it's OK in Safe mode and there's a network card in the system, take it out and boot to normal mode and see if you still have the issue.

Boot normally to windows, unplug the mouse and then do something with the keyboard instead e.g Ctrl+Esc, does it reboot? optionally you can try an plug the mouse back in and see what happens.

Try taking out memory sticks in order to narrow down a memory issue.

I know it's a new system, but a simple BIOS upgrade might do it (if available), you never know

I don't think it's related to overheating, because then it would reboot without your interference.

Let us know how you get on m8.

Lol OK the thing is, I always try to avoid asking anybody to do a reformat, it would be too easy

Hope it solves the issue, let us know again how you get along please m8.
