Activision have publishing rights for the next Bungie IP for 10 years:

The pair have announced today that they have entered into an exclusive ten-year partnership to bring Bungie's 'next big action game' IP to market.

Under the terms of the agreement, Activision will have exclusive, worldwide rights to publish and distribute all future Bungie games based on the new intellectual property on 'multiple platforms and devices'.

I hope Halo will be available on PS3, I have a 360 so it doesn't matter but all my mates use PS3 online and only a few use 360 anymore. I used to have all my mates on 360.

I think that was the point of going independant, MS made the money from halo, bungie wanted a slice from it.
