I've read alot about doing it, other than custom roms and apps2sd I can't see any real benefit.

the only custom rom I want is one that is 2.2 with sense ui. That's not likely to happen until an official htc build is leaked. By then I may as well wait for the official release.

I don't use enough apps to make apps2sd a requirement. Obviously your needs may be different but these are the only reasons I can see someone wanting to root their phone.

Really just to lose the Branding, not important enough to take the risk maybe

Paul at Modaco has sorted it but as you say, benefits?

Removing branding was another reason for me to root but I only get the o2 logo on start up so seemed a bit pointless.

I'd be tempted if there were some really interesting features blocked by a branded rom.

Only for my phone, made possibly by having the lovely iPad and iMac to play with but I'm loving my HTC. I've always liked their hardware it was just the bloody awful Windows Mobile. . .

I won't root mine as i've heard it causes issues when an official update comes out. My phone is from 3 and came with no branding at all and is unlocked already. The only reason i'd try it would be to install 2.2 but the official release won't be too far away.

It seems many of the issues causing people to root in the first place have been addressed already with more (SD install etc) being fixed in 2.2, I could do with more volume on alarms though, they are FEEBLE!

I just installed froyo 2.2 with sense.

Spent couple of hours doing this mainly because I couldn't figure out how to put on a custom ROM once I had rooted the device. Its not that difficult of a process. You root you get your stock OS with no sense. You can then fake flash and put on a new ROM. Takes about 5 minutes to get a new ROM on now so its very easy to update from here. Froyo with sense seems to work fine not run into any issues. Has some nice new touches like facebook calendar integration and also the new JIT engine which makes web browsing slightly faster affair. Also it can reference more of the devices ram!

Which rom are you using? I've gone with devillian 1.0
Have been looking at the open desire and leedroid roms, not switched yet, just waiting to see what the devillian update will bring..... Its going too include OTA updating which will be a nice touch.

I've been using DeFroST for a week now, no Sense but using Launcher Pro.

Loved the Desire before, love it even more now.

Applying a new ROM or an update is so easy via ROM Manager.

And running Full A2SD+, basically all Apps except Widgets a few others I have selected run from SD, plus the Dalvik-Cache is stored there, so virtually no hit on the poor 147mb of install space on the phone.

I'm running the latest leedroid 1.4c as of this morning. Work was going slow so I decided to do a flash.

Not really had much time to play with it but I'm liking the fact its slightly faster all around.

First create a gold card. Use a spare sd for this I used sandisk 2gig. You can put your normal one back after you have rooted.

    http://android.modaco.com/content/ge...ng-a-goldcard/

This is for the rooting of the desire once you have a gold card. Its quite easy, you need the sdk for android as well

    http://android.modaco.com/content/ht...-1-21-support/

Once you have a rooted desire you will now have a stock android version flashed 2.1 and no branding. Now next step is you need to get a fake boot and then just dump any rom you want on to the gold card and its as simple as rebooting installing and your done. No need for a pc except to copy on new roms.
    http://android.modaco.com/content/ht...-without-a-pc/

And if you want LeeDroid 1.4c which is Froyo (2.2) with HTC sense widgets.

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=724123

I didn't make an ext 3 partition when doing my device. I also used windows 7 x64 and it didn't make a different when rooting with r6.

Don't need a Gold Card anymore, just look for unrevoked. It tool a single Linux command line to root the phone.
