hacked hotmail - I keep recieving suspicious emails allegedly from my account

Hi,

I dont know if this is the right section or not sorry if it is if a mod could move to appropriate section.

I have been recieving emails from my hotmail account that claim to be from me. I only just changed my hotmail password last night after recieving a few emails in past month that have me as the sender.

Is there anyway to identify if it has come from my email address or if the address has been spoofed?

Interesting thing is that when I check my sent items there is nothing sent. One thing I have noticed though is that if something is sent via outlook using the outlook connector it will sometimes not show up in hotmail.

Obviously email is a complete scam but maybe others are experiancing similar and your help may also aid them.

I wouldn't say your account is hacked, more that your address has found its way onto a spambot server which is mailing out as if it is you. Not hard to do. Either that or you could actually have a virus on your computer.

Either way, I'd scan your PC for malware/viruses and ditch Hotmail entirely as it's just a spamfest anyway.

It could well have been hacked, if they're using software other than hotmail it won't show up in the sent folder. If you post all the headers from the email we might be able to figure it out.

Gmail FTW. It also shows you the last 10 login IPs/times/locations plus it can alert you to unusual activity.

I use gmail for general use and gmx for other things, the gmx email is nice and short so I dont need to type a lot everytime it needs to be entered. Also Gmail stores all ur emails while gmx does not so I trust it a bit more for secure sites.

do not rely on hotmail as any form of essential email client , especially for anything personal

get your self a few email accounts , hotmail , gmail , hushmail for instance

i use all 3 and others , depending on the actual contents of my emails and who they are going to

Well the blighters have gone and changed my password now so if there was any doubts about it being hacked they are now gone.

Cant believe it as that is my main email address. The annoying thing about this is I changed the password straight after I got this email alegdy sent by me. I guess they didn like me changng the password and decide to hack it again and change my account.

There are a couple of ways your password may have been obtained.

1, Key logger/virus/trojan
2, Saved on another computer i.e firefox saved passwords
3, friend has guessed your secret answer and changed your password.

It is more than likely one of these, although there are other ways to obtain passwords these are the main ways.

the emails are just spam they are not sent from the account they are addressed from/to they seem to be coming from botnets, ive seen the same email 20 times never from the same ip, it seems that they are using a name list and sending to domains as i have seen loads of errors in my mail servers logs for users that have never been set up. i.e john john1 john2 john3...........ect ect

as you can see from this header this came from a pc in japan.

Recently I have heard of the above happening to a lot of people, with the exception it sends a spam link to contacts. Then yesterday it happened to me! I use gmail.

I have changed my password but is there a way of telling how my contacts were obtained? I will need to check the IP logs but it was not in my sent folder. I have my account hooked up to my iPhone but that's always in my possession.
