Default French Parliament Votes To Ban The Veil

Jack Straw said it would never happen here but he's not in charge now. I personally hope we go the same way as the French in this as I think it is a security issue.
    http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/Wor...Niqab_Affected

The French parliament has voted overwhelmingly in favour of a ban on wearing veils over the face, a move which could make the Muslim burka illegal.

There were 336 votes for the bill and just one against at the National Assembly.
Most members of the main opposition group, the Socialist Party, refused to participate in the vote.
President Nicolas Sarkozy has pushed for the law, saying the full veil "hurts the dignity of women, and is not acceptable in French society".
But government advisers warned the proposed ban could be unconstitutional.
Face-covering veils, like the burka and niqab, are worn by many Muslim women out of choice and are not required by Islamic law.

However, some critics claim that many are pressured into wearing the veil.
Although France has the largest Muslim population in Europe - an estimated five million people - the veil ban is thought to only directly affect fewer than 2,000 women.
The new legislation would forbid face-covering Muslim veils in all public places in France, including on the country's streets.
Anyone caught flouting the ban would face a £125 fine or citizenship classes, or both.
Those convicted of forcing someone else to wear a full veil would be hit with a fine of £25,000 and a one-year jail sentence.
If the ban is approved by parliament the law could come into force by September.
A similar law was passed in Belgium in April.

Not really, but i would feel a lot safer in my working environment (inner Birmingham) to be able to identify my clients and "customers" without the cloaking of the face. Is'nt the Balaclava seen in the same light? A customer wearing a full face mask, including a motor cycle helmet, would never be served in a bank/building society/most supermarkets. In these days of national security surely it makes sense to be able to identify peoples faces. You can wear a clowns out fit as far as I'm concerned but there must be some level of acceptance that face features need to be visible.

Try wearing shorts in an Arab state or take your top off. You'll be banged up if you are caught.

They dictate what people wear in their country of origin, so why can't we? Very true indeed that you can't wear helmets or balaclavas in banks and to be honest these veils are not much different.

BTW I'm neither for or against the ban, before anyone starts trying to put me in a box.

    Where's Del's post gone?

And we shouldn't because then our country will be just as bad as theirs, freedom is quickly becoming a thing of the past under the false pretense of 'oooh, that ninja's going to explode!'.

    As I said: Bollocks.

About time we come out of the fucking dark ages. Maybe the poor women won't be 2nd class citizens anymore.
But my m8 disagrees completely saying telling people how they may or may not dress is hardly progressive. "The poor women" choose to dress in that manner as do some orders of Christian nuns. Start the ban the Habit campaign!

Well yes and no. Don't mean that it should be tit for tat with muslim countries, just pointing out a fact.

Garages/pubs/supermarkets/etc can make their own rules and do as they please (within reason) on their own property, this is nothing to do with that, this is about public liberties. If you feel unsafe serving people who have their face concealed then you either need to try and have the policies changed in your place of work, or quit.

It is in many ways, but this is just using religion as an excuse for the French government to have tighter controls over the French populus.
Besides, IIRC the full face veil is a cultural thing, and their is nothing written in the Koran about covering of the face, only the hair.

The arguments regarding security in banks etc. when someone's face is completely obfuscated are valid, and the very reason for wearing these veils in the first place is just ridiculous: Women are temptresses that will corrupt and cause otherwise good (and of course, god fearing) men to commit adultery if not hidden away like that. Riiight. That thinking is the cause of the issues here.

However, the very idea of a ban on a type of clothing is just stupid. Can they similarly justify banning makeup and wigs, since that can equally be used to disguise someone?

It would be nice to see a problem addressed, rather than a symptom supressed.

There's nothing religious about what they are wearing, it's a tradition of one country that has spread. No where in islam does it say that you must be fully covered. It merely states that women should dress modestly covering their arms and legs and hair basically don't walk down the street wearing a bikini because us blokes are pervy predators.

The veil is banned in Tunisia which has a 98% Muslim population so this French ban is nothing new really and I expect other countrysto follow soon too.

they do do they....they decide who they serve etc if you try to walk into a bank with a helmet on you will be told to remove it, what would happen if they told a woman to remove her veil????? i can just see it now!! it is about public libeties your right its about EVERYONE BEING TREATED EQUALLY. if i cant wear a fucking helmet in a bank why the fuck should they be allowed to cover their face in a bank.... and, as it has been pointed out its not about religion, the veil, so cant even use that as a get out. so why shouldnt it be banned????? if they shouldnt ban it because they have no right to dictate what people wear then great but then they have no right to dictate what people wear full stop, if a bank cant refuse to serve someone in a veil, which they wouldnt as every liberal ldo gooder in the country would jump on then they have no right to refuse to serve anyone who has their face covered!!! god this fucks me off so much this subject!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Read the first line of my quote again. Yes, they decide who they serve, when they open etc. That's their policies.
In the same way pubs and clubs can refuse entry to those wearing certain clothes, like football colours, trainers, Stone Island stuff. Their policies.

This has nothing to do about privately owned areas, like banks and bars, this is about banning an item of clothing from any and every public place in France and I think that leads to a long and slippery slope.

There is a reason you cant wear a helmet in a bank. Its because there have been FUCKING LOADS of incidents of people robbing banks whilst wearing helmets. Now, to the best of my knowledge, there is yet to be a case in this country of a veiled woman robbing a bank, or indeed committing a violent crime and using her clothing as a means to avoid detection. Could it happen? Yes, probably. But until it does, I would recommend people stop being typical Daily Mail readers and objecting to things that just aren't worth getting on your high horse about.
