Fat cleared from London sewers will fill nine double-decker buses

Enough fat to fill nine double-decker buses is being removed from sewers in central London in the largest ever sewer clean-up of its kind.

A team of "flushers" equipped with full breathing apparatus has been drafted in with shovels to dig out an estimated 1,000 tonnes of putrid fat from an area under Leicester Square.

They use powerful jets to break it down.


The operation, which is being mounted by Thames Water, began in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The build-up of fat and grease underground is the result of years of "sewer abuse" - when anything other than water, human waste and toilet paper is put down drains - according to Thames Water.
Danny Brackley, the water company's sewer flusher, said: "We're used to getting our hands dirty, but nothing on this scale.
"We couldn't even access the sewer as it was blocked by a four-foot wall of solid fat."
The clean-up is expected to last for around two weeks.
Thames Water spends £12 million a year clearing around 55,000 sewer blockages across London and the Thames Valley.

hmm cant see his ba equipment but he is carrying his gas monitor as soon as it detects gases it will trigger the alarms and thats when he needs to put on his mask and get out of there safely

Somewhere out of the shot will be a ready to use escape set. The press don't want you to see that as they like to convey a nice working atmosphere even though that is one of the worst jobs in the world.

What he is doing is safe and would have been vented(probably force vented) for a couple of hours. It is smelly but generally very safe. I spent a few months as part of the rescue team for these guys and there is rarly an incident. When an alarm goes off it is usually because someone has dropped the gas detector.

Luckilly I now only need to ever go into the potable water trunk mains. Much nicer atmosphere but a completly different set of associated dangers.
