Get youself freestyle dash (I'd go with one of the older ones to start with) downloaded and stick it on a cd for starters and you can work from there.

In the same situation as you, but with no ofiicial HD.
Am looking at doing the 3.5" Mod and using that as the SATA drive.

As for your prob, can you not do it from a USB stick?

If I find out I'll post back here, lots of reading to do today to get my head round all the jtag possibilities, thank god xb-scene forums are back up!

Format a USB stick for use with the 360 (possible with 9199)

Get a program that will read it (there's a few that will read the mem stick like Modio and FatX explorer or something like that)

    Copy a program like XexMenu.

How is the CD-rom dead? Not spinning up,opening or laser?

yeah do what omgporn says format usb memory stick, use this as you m$ drive so to speak, then if you are using the the latest patches with your 9199 freestyle (the dash launch ones) you can tell the console where to boot from ie usb or other and what to boot at startup. so you can put your dash on usb and no need for dvd drive.

Ah, I didnt know you could use a USB Pen as a "official" drive so to speak...

Can this also be done with a USB External?

Yer it can but can only format it to some ridiculously small size

Ok, might be the way forward for me atm then..

I have no official HD for my jtag box, so am looking at either the 3.5" HD Mod and using a 200gb or 320gb drive i have laying around, or buying a 2nd hand 20gb official HD and using a USB caddy.

Thanks for the info guys, will do more reading!

edit: I actually think I have an OLD 10gb drive somewhere, that way I wont lose any gb with the 16gb limit.
Will try and dig it out.

Do you have a MS HDD caddy? Sure you'll be able to buy a cheap WD drive.

The 200/320gb drive has to be in Fat32 for it to work with Xex menu and Freestyle dash.

If you have a way formatting a drive for content as if an MS drive, use the 10GB for DLC and XBLA and use the large external for retail games.

The only caddy I have is the 20gb one used on my "Live" 360 (modded but still unbanned )
They don't need to be WD drives anymore do they, thought they could be any drive?

Starting to get my head round it a bit now (note I said "a bit" haha)..

Gonna try and run xexloader/xexmenu from 2gb/4gb pens I have here, and get it to lauch some games off an external USB caddy.
I think the prob will be that I need to copy stuff to Content/xxxxxx/0000 etc, and I'm sure that only happens on an internal drive...so installing from/to usb won't work?

There are so many tuts and guides and new revisions of hacks (that's homebrew for you!) that it's hard to know what to follow since new hacks and code comes out. Then all the threads contradict each other..doesn'ty help me sitting reading a 20 page thread thinking "wtf" then realising the thread is 2 years old hahaha

Anyway, will test and report back

just use one external hd, format it fat32 (windoze won't let you format over 32 gig not sure on the size there are programs that do.)
then plug it in to your freestyle console or any with 9199 dash and let the console format it to a 16 gig partition, then you have memory card/m$ hd on your usb and can use the rest for "homebrew" and the like all one one unit.

Ah, that's true. I didn't think of getting the xbox to partition it like that.

I used Fat32Formatter when I was sorting out my 80gb.

Yeah I have SwissKnife or something here ready to prepare the HD, and I'm gonna forget the 2gb/4gb pens and follow your advice...

    OK so just to confirm...

    1. Get 320Gb USB External HD
    2. Format to FAT32 on PC
    3. Plug into jtag box via USB, and "Format"..which will give me a 16Gb 360 usable partition.
    4. Install XexMenu via pen/cd to this new 16Gb partition (using it like official M$ internal HD)
    5. Remaining 300Gbish used for retail game (extracted iso's) and XBLA patched to full games.

    Does that sound right?

    sounds good
there is a fatx program so you can add-extarct files directly to the drive (the xbox formatted bit) can't remember for the life of me what it's called atm.
