1st4sport Level 2 Award in Leadership through Football (QCF) developed in partnership with The FA

The FA and 1st4sport are today launching the Qualification Specification for the new ‘Level 2 Award in Leadership through Football’ which will be available for delivery from September 2010.

The qualification has been developed with the support and technical direction of FA Learning and is exclusively awarded and administered by 1st4sport Qualifications. The qualification has been accredited by Ofqual onto the QCF carrying a weighting of nine credits – 90 learning hours.

The supporting course has been designed for learners aged 14-19 and can be delivered as a standalone qualification or as part of the new Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure.

Leadership through Football has been designed to be learner-centred and engaging through its football focus. The 90 learning hours, of which a minimum of 56 are recommended to be delivered as guided learning hours, support the learners through four exciting modules focusing on the skills of:-

    • Lead Football Activity Sessions (three credits)
    • Referee Football Activity Sessions and Small-sided Games (two credits)
    • Work with Small-sided Teams in Football (two credits)
    • Contribute to the organisation and delivery of a football event for young people (two credits)

The specification (click here to open) and fact/FAQ sheets (click here to open) outline the qualification requirements, delivery format, criteria for tutors, assessment, facility requirements and resources amongst other details on how to become a 1st4sport registered centre.

The package for centres will include, for those attending FA Regional Induction events, a comprehensive tutor pack including step-by-step session plans, session templates, PowerPoint presentations and a tutor DVD.

FA Learning will be holding one-day Regional familiarisation events for Category One tutors in June. (Full details of Tutor criteria can be found on page seven). These events will take place at the start of June on a needs-led basis, and will carry a charge which will include a tutor and candidate pack. It is proposed that a national three day residential familiarisation event will be held in September for Category Two tutors.

At this stage, anyone wishing to apply to become a registered centre for this qualification should contact 1st4sport and may do so, subject to their workforce having completed The FA Induction. Details of the application process can be found at www.1st4sportqualifications.com.

For all other general FA enquiries in relation to the award please contact Roger Davies – National Game Coaching in Education Manager Roger.Davies@TheFA.com who is leading the development of the Learning Programme.

When I did my coaching badges it was UEFA A/B/C...the gradings have changed now to Level 1/2/3 etc... I'm a Level 2 in todays grading system.

I did my original course at college, which was free, from there you have pay, and the highest level you have to have lots of experience, ability and be invited (or recommended) for it.

Ashley, contact a local FA Charter Standard club and tell them you'd like to volunteer to coach. In order to satisfy the FA Charter requirements, all coaches have to be CRB checked and have a min of level 1. Most clubs will pay for you to do the course and put you through level 2 and 3 if you want to advance.
You have to put in 16 hours of practical coaching as part of the level 1 course anyway so you will need to be part of a club regardless. Doing it that way saves you paying.

I did some of the badges in the late 90's (FA coaching Cert, UEFA B, allowed to skip UEFA C). I've had to retake Level 1 - 3 now though to satisfy the Charter Standard of my current club but it's hardly taxing if you've been coaching for a while.

You don't technically "need" anything except a good grasp of the rules of football, some leadership skills, and a club willing to unleash you on their unsuspecting clientel.
If the club you join is an FA Charter Standards club, they will insist you are CRB checked and take at least the FA Level 1 coaching qual. Even if you join a non-Charter club, I'd recommend doing the course anyway as it will teach you how to run a structured training session and coach effectively.

Actually Marky, I've just noticed you're in Newcastle. I coach at Red House Farm Juniors in Gosforth so if you're serious about getting involved, drop me a PM with some details (name, age, tel no.) and I may be able to get you hooked up assisting to learn the ropes for a while... It's a fairly large club with 3-4 teams in each age group from 8 to 16's so plenty of scope.

Thanks neo2810, I've managed to sort out a team to go along to (Cramlington Juniors), my nephew plays there so i'm going to see how they can help me out.

Cool, cram jrs is a good club, just has a few dickheads on the coach list. You'll enjoy the std of footy though.
