Need to update jailbroken 2g, will itunes backup my photos, texts, contacts?

I need to update jailbroken 2g, will itunes backup my photos, texts, contacts etc and then just copy them over to the new version?

I'm on version 3.0. Anyone got any tips on what version to upgrade to, software to use to jailbreak, anything I should look forward to? Sorry about my laziness!

The 2G isn't supported anymore. The highest version you will be able to install is 3.1.3 I believe.

If you are upgrading then it shouldn't wipe your contacts, etc. It will only remove the jailbreak. But you can jailbreak again using Pwnage Tool/redsn0w/Spirit.

However, make a backup for good measure. Always better to be safe than sorry.

do a proper full back up. Right click on the device in iTunes and select Backup.

How do I backup my installous apps/data? There's only one app I care about which is actually free but only available on the US store so I had to get it through appulous! The data for it is very important. I've googled it but a lot of the info seems quite out of date (forum posts etc.).

if it's a modernish app it should save the user data in an area covered by the regular itunes backup. Most apps have since about 3.0 but can't comment on that particular app.

There are cydia app backup programs but they're all a bit hit and miss. I had decent results using the rock backup service and also aptbackup. There was another (paid) one but I never tried it.

All done now, thanks a lot for your help! iTunes copied across the key app and data. I didn't think iTunes would copy the app as well, result!
