    Default BT Warning

    just had a E-mail

    Dear Customer,
We thought you'd like to know that your broadband usage in July is now above 80GB.
In accordance with our Fair Usage Policy, and to protect the online experience of all our customers, if your monthly broadband usage goes over 100GB, we'll restrict your broadband speed at peak times (typically this is between 5pm and 12am, but these times may change depending on the demands on the network) to 1Mbps for 30 days.
Please note: your service won't be affected in any other way - we'll restrict only your speed, not the amount you can upload and download.
We'll email you again to let you know if your usage exceeds 100GB. For more information, please see our Fair Usage Policy.

What does this mean for me?
You have received this email because your broadband usage this month means you are a very heavy user (which is typically less than 1 per cent of all customers). If your usage has unexpectedly increased it may be for several reasons. If you have downloaded a peer-to-peer (P2P) client to your PC then your usage levels can be affected by other P2P users uploading files from your PC, you may need to adjust the settings or remove the client. It is also important to check that your wireless connection is password protected. If you suspect that your password is no longer secure then this should be changed.
You can keep track of your usage by downloading a free, independent, usage monitor from the web and installing it on your PC. This will only report the usage driven by that machine but it will provide an indication of your usage levels.

    Best wishes,
    BT Total Broadband team

when I was with BT I was working there and even though it was either cheap or free I binned it and went to Be* and never looked back,

since i moved to another provider ive not been throttled at all at any time night or day. at the time I was with BT my monthly average was somewhere in the 150-250gb a month range although alot of that was down to downloads there was a fair chunk related to iplayer and tvcatchup and since the iplayer update to allow hd im sure my usage has gone up a little to the point where I think im nearer the 250-300gb and I never hear a thing from them other than them thanking me for my payment by text and email

I have no choice but to use BT because of where I live

tbh it doesn't bother me being throttled in an evening as I just download everything I need in the day time while am at work

Virgin sent me a similar letter, but that was for doing in a shitload in peak time, just asked that I do the majority after 9pm.

They have changed their policy, I was with BT and exceeded their FUP every month buy a few hundred GB. Back then they throttled you as they are doing to you but continued excessive downloading they requested payment of £1 per GB and asked me for £230 for November and December on top of the monthly subscription so I moved to BE and didn't pay them anything.

Stupid thing is they throttle on all but the 50mbit. Now that really doesn't make much sense as the 50mbit is what all the hardcore downloaders will be using so will hit their network/volumes.

Ask a member to refer you so you get free connection ( and a free month for the person that refers you)

We used to use Be for some of our internet lines on some sites and sometimes had problems with Be's dns servers. Changed to opendns (208.67.220.220 / 208.67.222.222) and no problems.
