Default 3GS stopped charging in car

I have a car charger for my 3GS and the other day it stopped charging. When I got home I plugged it into my mains charger and it was fine so assumed it was just the car charger.
Bought a new one today and the guy had to try three different ones before we found one that worked. Ended up buying one that came with a USB lead, that plugged into the car bit and also a mains bit.
I found it really odd that my phone stopped charging in the car and that none of the 'cheapy' chargers worked.
Do you think I could have fried something in the phone? It's a warranty replacement, only about three weeks old. Really can't be arsed making an appointment again.

You can buy adaptors that convert the 'old' chargers into new ones. Most i-devices now require a voltage on the data pins as well as the power pins.

oh if you haven't recently updated it must be something else. The stopping of the older type charger working was when we went to os 3.x

This is definitely buggered. Wouldn't charge at all on the way to work yesterday and today. Tried someone elses and it worked first time.
Back to the Apple centre tomorrow. Hopefully the new invisible shield will come tomorrow as well, so I can keep the replacement nice.
