Wii Renke's Ultimate Wii Soft Mod Guide 2010 - FEEDBACK AND DISCUSSION

    Hi there,

I've been putting together some up to date info for the people on here, just need it proof reading, cos i'd hate for any of the info to hurt a Wii! So if i put a draft up in abit, could you pm me if there's anything stupid or stuff that should be in there? I've been looking for mistakes for a while now and it's getting blurred

So if the Mods could let this run for a couple of days, i can ammend as required, then hopefully a sticky?

    Regards Renke

yeah I'll have a glance over it too, I've done a few 4.2s recently so I know a few of the ins and outs. I wrote a few guides for various things years ago and its always a worry if you write something that could potentially nuke peoples systems if you get it wrong.

Wii Renke's Wii Soft Mod Guide - UPDATED 18/10/10

    Wii Softmodding Guide (3.0-4.2)

I have now switched this tutorial to use Multi-Mod Manger. This Application is a combination of several very good homebrew apps, whilst I still prefer to use individual apps, this app will make softmodding alot faster and easier for all users.

    Warning
You are going to attempt to enable the Wii to do things it wasn’t designed to do and in doing so there is always a risk that something could go wrong – so please spend some time doing background reading and don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Wii consoles purchased towards the end of 2009 and ALL BLACK or RED Wii consoles will not read backup discs, But will play backups from a USB Loader.
To check to see if your Wii has the new D3-2 Drive got to this site and check – http://www.wiidrives.com/list

    Your System Menu Version
    Spoiler:
Before you can softmod your Wii you need to find out what System Menu Version you have and also what the Region Code your Wii is.
    Find your System Menu Version

    · Press Wii Options
    · Press Wii Settings

Your System Menu Version and Region Code are listed in the top right corner
    Firmware Version 3.1 - 4.3 followed by region code U=USA NTSC123E=EUROPE PAL123J=JAPAN NTSC

System Menu Version / System IOS / Version

    3.1 (IOS30) V1039 <--------Poor hardware support, should upgrade
    3.2 (IOS30) V1040
    3.3 (IOS30) V2576 <--------Poor hardware support, should upgrade
    3.4 (IOS50) V4887 <--------Poor hardware support, should upgrade
    4.0 (IOS60) V6174 <--------Upgrade System Menu - May require IOS / Channel update
4.1 (IOS60) V6174 <--------No need to Upgrade System Menu - May require IOS / Channel update
4.2 (IOS70) V6687 <--------No need to Upgrade System Menu - May require IOS / Channel update
4.3 (IOS80) V6943 <--------Latest Version Homebrew Killer DO NOT Upgrade

    Upgrading System Menu
Should I upgrade my Wii? That really depends on what you want your Wii to do. System Menu's 3.1-3.4 Lack alot of IOS & Hardware support updates, like SDHC support & allow Virtual Console/WiiWare games to be played from the SD card.
System Menu 3.2 used to be favored by modders who used to have to downgrade their Wii's the play homebrew and add brick protection. But seeing as how All versions can be modded at the moment there is no further need for this.

4.2E OfflineUpdateFiles Will after you have softmodded your Wii, update your system menu to 4.2E, Install all the IOS's to the latest revisions & Install the latest Shopping Channel, But unlike the Nintendo Update it will not stub any IOS, remove any cIOS or Install the dreaded Boot2 Update.
Only 4.2E System Menu is Included in this Download - Do Not Use for 4.2U or 4.2J

    Internet Connection
If you have lost you PIN as I had and can’t disable your parental code then I recommend using this web page to get your master reset code:- Parental Code Unlocker
    Requirements For SoftModding Your Wii
    Spoiler:

1xSD Card with Softmod Files on Root of SD Card (256MB -2GB NON SDHC) Formatted to FAT32
1xSD Card for BootMii NAND Backup Good Quality (1-2GB NON SDHC) Formatted to FAT32 - Preferred as runtime files are written

You may wish to use only 1 SD card for both the Softmod files and your NAND backup and BootMii runtime files, This is fine but I suggest the SD card be of Good Quality
Remove all GameCube memory cards and controllers. This step is very important. DO NOT ignore it.

SoftModFiles (All versions Except 4.3) Updated 18/10/10

    4.2'E' (PAL) OfflineUpdateFiles Updated 18/10/10

    System Menu 4.2
The Download has BannerBomb V2 in the private folder already so no swopping of files is required
    System Menu 3.1 - 4.1
Delete the 'private' folder and replace with the one in the Bannerbomb V1 folder, in the alternative folder
    What Not To Do
    Spoiler:
    warning

    Warning

Never uninstall your System Menu Your Wii will not work very well without a system menu.
    Never uninstall your System IOS - IOS30, IOS50, IOS60, IOS70 & IOS80
Never uninstall any IOS less the 200 - IOS files under 200 are important to the Wii, it is very important you will brick. Never ever uninstall.
Never Downgrade, and then upgrade without removing the Stubbed ISO's.

Anyone who has downgraded should install the following System IOS-
    IOS70-64-v6687.wad system IOS for 4.2 Alternatively use - Dop-Mii
    IOS60-64-v6174.wad system IOS for 4.0 and 4.1 Alternatively use - Dop-Mii
    IOS50-64-v4889.wad system IOS for 3.4 Alternatively use - Dop-Mii

When your Wii updated, it stubbed all System IOS files for lower System menus. Downgrading and then upgrading to a system menu which uses an IOS that was stubbed will BRICK your Wii. Be sure to install the System IOS, before install a new System Menu.

It is best not to downgrade at all. It is not necessary.

    Never Update online
Updating online will remove all softmods; bootmii included, and could brick your Wii.
Don't do this unless you're instructed to do so by a forum mod.

    Never update from disk
Updating from disk can brick or semi-brick your Wii. It is almost never necessary, even when the disk say's otherwise.
Don't do this unless you're instructed to do so by a forum mod.

Never downgrade system menu of newer Wii's
System menus less than 3.4 do not support newer Wii hardware. Downgrading a newer Wii will result in a brick.
Example- Downgrading a newer Wii to 3.2 could brick it.

Never downgrade IOS's files of newer Wii's
Newer Wii's will not function with many downgraded IOS files. Downgrading your IOS files to enable trucha bug could cause many black screens or worse, brick your Wii.
Example- Downgrading IOS36 to IOS36-v1042 will cause most Homebrew to load to black screens on newer Wii's
Use TBR, or Dop-IOS-Mod to enable trucha bug instead

Never install WAD's of unknown origin.
Bad WAD's can bannerbrick your Wii, or worse, brick your Wii. There have been some malicious wads in circulation, that when installed can brick your Wii. Only download and install from a reputable source, one with good feedback. Always read the comments.

    Never install System Menu Themes
Without bootmii install as boot2. System menu themes have a bad habit of bricking Wii's. Usually because they are not compatible with your current system menu, and other issues. Installing them will remove your preloader/priiloader, so if you don't have bootmii installed as boot2, there is very little you can do to recover. Having a theme is not worth the risks. Don't do it, or be prepared to pay the price.

    Never install cIOSCORP or Darkcorp
Unless you know what cIOSCORP or Darkcorp are, what ithey do, and fully understand the risks involved in there installation, do not install it. cIOSCORP & Darkcorp are very complex system modifications, which offers legitimate features, but there installation can be very problematic. If you don't know what it is, don't install it. Don't install it to fix black screen issues with games.

    Never format your Wii
Formatting your Wii will not remove all of your softmods, and it could brick your Wii.

Never update a region changed Korean Wii.
If you have a region changed Korean Wii, updating will result in a brick.
You will receive error 003, which is currently unfix-able. Korean Wii's have a LKM######### serial number. If you have one of these, do not update your Wii. Also region changed Korean Wii's should install cIOS70-v6174-v3.5.wad, which may prevent "error 003" should you update by mistake. Don't update.

    Never format a semi-bricked Wii
If your Wii is semi-bricked from an out of region disk update and you are unable to enter the system settings, never format.
Formatting a semi-bricked Wii, with Nintendo's Recovery disk or other method will result in a bigger brick.

    Never listen to youtube
Youtube guides are a nice idea, but they FAIL all too often.
Many guides become out dated, and will brick Wii's.

    Never rush
Most bricks happen from careless actions. Slow down, read the forums, and be sure to ask questions.

USB Loader Options / Game Managers
    Spoiler:

The Wii MUST be connected to the USB HDD using the bottom USB port, with the Wii lying flat (Port nearest the edge)
Decide what file system you are going to use FAT32, WBFS and prepare your hard drive accordingly
It is my understanding that the USB Loader has to Boot from the 1st partition on the drive, although you can select other partitions after loading, there has been issues with Hidden partitions when using drives from old laptops.

Check the compatibility of your USB HDD

    FAT32 Formatter

Configurable USB loader is already on the SD Card download, However leaving your SD Card in the Wii loaded with all those Apps is just asking for trouble if you have kids. So I would suggest a separate SD just for the USB Loader.

    Install USB Loader Forwarder
If you followed the guide all the way through then you will of installed a Channel Forwarder for Configurable USB Loader FAT32, Forwarders are better as in they point to a file stored on your SD/USB HDD in turn loading your app.
This means that you don’t have to go through HBC to manually load the USB loader

Some of the most popular USB Loaders are listed below and associated forwarders:-

    USB Loader Releases

    Neogamma
Neogamma is the application of choice if you wish to play backup discs, the version on the SD card will install a forwarder channel and has the ability to patch newer games as long as the SD card is in the Wii, with the required files in the neogamma folder. Neoagamma also has the ability to launch games stored on a WBFS partitioned USB Drive.
    Current Revision R9 B47

    Cover Art & Game Info
Most USB Loaders have the ability to download a wide variety of cover art from the Internet. 3D Covers Art, Disc Art & Game Info

    Best Wii Cover Art Site

    Game Managers
USB loaders have evolved very quickly over the past 6 months and as a result game backups can be in several file formats: WBFS,ciso, iso
In addition to that USB Loaders can Read and Write to different file systems:WBFS,FAT32,NTFS
Therefore Game Mangers are essential to transfer between formats and devices
Some of the most popular Game mangers are listed below:-

    Wii Game Manager
    Wii Backup Manager (Handles ciso)
    WBFS Manager
    Common Wii Error Codes
    Spoiler:

Black screen when launching game: Can be caused by lots of things. Please post more information if you want help.

Exception DSi, Code Dump error: 99% of these kind of errors are harmless and only require you to restart the application that caused the fault, at most a power reset is required.

    -1: Wad Install Error.
If a file was needed, then it was not in the correct folder. cIOS installed incorrectly, out of date, or missing. If you are using cios38rev14 installer, put ios38-64-3610.wad file in the root of the SD card. Each program needs its files in specific folders, so pay attention to that. Can also be a bad wad or not enough space on the Wii. Possibly formatted the SD card incorrectly.
    DVD Error -2: Backup Launcher.
Possibly a newer Wii with D3-2 drive that will not run blank DVDs or an out of date DVDx install. Install latest version of DVDx through the homebrew channel. Ensure application has also been updated to look for the correct version of DVDx (This changed with version 1.0.5)

    003: Unauthorized device on 4.2.
No workaround on this yet, try unplugging any chips or whatever Nintendo thinks is unauthorized from the wii. Seems like Korean wiis are the most likely to get this error.
    3: Wii disk channel.
    unknown error at this moment.
    102: Installing/Uninstalling WAD’s/Downgrading/Region Changing.
If it’s a WAD files ticket just reinstall the WAD and then uninstall using Wad manager. If it’s a missing ticket due to a downgrade or region change then you may have a bricked Wii. Try to reinstall all IOS’s from original sources.
    116: Network Connection Error.

    574: DVD Read Error.
Bad burn/media or out of date IOS. May not be compatible with certain versions of backup launchers (new revs should fix this). make sure the type of media you’re using is compatible with the Wii and/or your computer’s DVD Burner. Make sure you are using DVD-R discs, seeing as they are most compatible. Also try setting booktype to DVD-ROM. If using Win Vista/7 make sure burning with admin rights.
    579: DVD Read Error.
Bad burn/media or out of date IOS. May not be compatible with certain versions of backup launchers (new revs should fix this). make sure the type of media you’re using is compatible with the Wii and/or your computer’s DVD Burner. 1017: IOS Installation Error.
Most likely using an old or incorrect IOS, missing an IOS, or the IOS you’re trying to install cannot be installed on top of another. Fix it by installing a newer IOS 249 than the one you already have (if you don’t have it, try installing it). If you still get this error, fix it the same way as Error 2011.

Most likely have cIOS 37 (or other outdated/incorrect IOS) still installed. Memory might be full. Wad may be corrupt (patched/injected incorrectly).
    1035: Corrupt IOS.
Most likely caused by using incorrect or bad IOS/wad installations. Fix it the same way as Error 2011.
    1036: Update error in Waninkoko’s 4.1 Updater.
Do not use as it will download a stubbed IOS60 now which could brick your Wii.
    1101: DVD Read Error.
Bad burn/media or incorrect cios. make sure the type of media you’re using is compatible with the Wii and/or your computer’s DVD Burner. Make sure you are using DVD-R discs, seeing as they are most compatible. Also try setting booktype to DVD-ROM. If using Win Vista/7 make sure burning with admin rights. Bad wad, re-download. Black screen when using a loader. Possibly using cIOS rev 15. Use rev 14 instead

There is no known vulnerable IOS installed on this Wii.
Please note that we will not use a fakesighned IOS Due to security reasons.

HackMii installation failure it is a bug installed by the HackMii team, which prevents HackMii running under a fakesigned IOS36. You will most likely get this when you are trying to install HackMii with a modified IOS36, trucha bug or any other way.
Install a clean IOS36 using Dop IOS MOD and retry

    Upside down HBC problem:
This will happen when the ios HBC runs on (press home button on HBC to see it) is trucha signed. Installing latest HBC should fix the problem or reinstall a clean version of that IOS.

Aimed at the guys that have softmodded a couple of Wii's,

In step (2) where we create a fakesigned IOS36, recently i have been using dop ios mod as the process is more automated than that of trucha bug restorer mod.
However dop ios mod keeps getting more features added and therefore not as road tested.
For example in V11.3 / V11.4 (fixed in V11.5)i have just found out there is a bug with the syscheck feature, causing channels not to load. Although i don't use this feature in the tutorial i'd hate for anyone to have hassle by using it.
So where do you draw the line?

    Cheers

for me the manual way would be better.

ok its is slightly longer but at least you are guaranteed a working method that completely eliminates the risk of a problem.

or in the least, if you stick with dopios, make it very clear that the version suggested works but other versions are not tested with this tutorial.

Superb mate, even added the simple steps where I went wrong like hand controllers not working.. Excellent stuff. Might even adventure and do another one..lol. I'm gussing if wii sports resort requires 4.1 and there is an older version present it is ok to go on the net and upgrade first?? Then when finished modding adjust in hacks to disable online updates?? Thanks Jon

About Wii sport resort, it doesn't need 4.1 to work, it's that the 4.1 update fixed an error to do with keep replaying the intro video after loading wiiware games - so really doesn't affect usb loaders.

Zippeyrude, the patching ios36 part seems to work very, it's just that there trying to make dopiodmod a 'all-in-one' kinda app, that will be great when they get it sorted, its the add on features that i'm not to sure about, inparticular the syscheck.

    Regards

Did you see the bit in post 16 about not using syscheck on dopiosmod v11.3 & v11.4? it's an extra feature that don't work, fixed in v11.5. just so you know.

    cheers
